Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Eric in South Holland, IL
Our last session covered homework material from chapter 2.2 in the student's textbook. The questions dealt with graphing sine and cosine functions using the equations y=AsinB(x-C)+D. The equation was also used to understand and find the amplitude, period, vertical shift, and horizontal shift. I challenged him to answer unassigned questions that dealt writing the equation for the given sine graph. He performed well with all concepts.

Today was my first session with this student. She is a bright girl but she was having trouble catching up on her work and understanding the graphs of trig functions. We started by going over some packets she had been assigned. I showed her how a constant would affect the graph of a function when put in different places and why. She seems to be able to memorize lists of steps to solve problems very easily but has trouble formulating the steps themselves. This is something I intend to work on in the future since it is more useful to know how to do the latter. Finally we reviewed algebra with imaginary numbers.

At the beginning of session, we went over wrong quiz questions and did the corrections together. I have seen a lot progress. There were 6 homework problems about solving trigonometric equations, and a two-sided challenge paper her teacher assigned to finish on Monday. We went over 2 of them together, and she solved the rest by drawing triangles into appropriate quadrants and finding all possible angles in 2 Pi Period by herself under my observation. She was deciding what method she needed to use without a reminder on the last paper, which shows the good progress she is making..

We worked on simple interest problems to refresh from the week before. I provided basic simple interest problems and the girls practiced working on them without looking at the formula, it was important that they learn how to identify the interest, principle and rate in a word problem. The rest of the session, I introduced them to compounded interest - we did basic problems involving tables.

The student and I covered fractions today. I helped her understand that a fraction is part of a whole and guided her in doing several pages in her workbook. We will continue to do more practice on fractions. We also did two pages from her math homework that was sent from the school. These included arithmetic word questions, such as "what is 10 less than 1000"? She needed a little help translating the words into a number problem.
