Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

MCAT Tutoring review by James in South Holland, IL
Another great session. The student got a 91 on his test from Thursday. He did most of calculations right. His problems were with labeling his answers, and one was really a technicality that the teacher counted off for, but he has a good handle on the material. His next section is with graphs and lines. We're working on how to graph lines using the slope-intercept equation.

The student and I  wrote and drilled orally all of the case endings (less emphasis on the 4th declension) and declined adjective/noun in which the declension did not agree. Recognizing and applying the cases is a foundational skill, and a strong knowledge of this should aid the student for the rest of the year.  I presented a review lesson the perfect system in the passive indicative.  We covered perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect tenses, and we managed to review forming their active verb counterparts as well.  The student  was focused and did a great job!

MCAT Tutoring review by Derek in South Holland, IL
Student A and Student B are both working at a steady pace. I spent the first hour with Student B working through a grammar section of one of the practice ACTs. There are a few types of grammar errors that are still tripping her up, but often she can spot the correct answer by instinct even if she is unsure how to spell out the rule being applied. We reviewed rules as we went to help her know what to spot. Student A and I worked together through a reading comprehension section. He expressed that he seems to have difficulty with passages that are abstract and philosophical, as opposed to fiction passages, the meaning of which tends to be more straightforward. We focused on some of this type first but still worked on some questions over a fiction passage just for practice. Both students seem to be improving and increasing in confidence.

The student and I spent most of our time reviewing time-distance/velocity graphs for his physics class. I made up several problems for him to practice with and coached him through them. I also taught him several math concepts from his Pre-Calc class.
