Test Prep Tutoring review by Sara in Aurora, IL
The student and I concentrated on the math portion of the ACT. Her favorite subject in school is math, and she certainly seemed more confident in this area than in either English or reading comprehension. There were some specific areas that I noticed she needed work on from her diagnostic test, so we first went over the rules for those problems. They involved finding the equation for a line, using fractions, finding percentages, and finding averages.

Student and I discussed his previous test scores and what he felt were his biggest obstacles to getting the score he wanted. He feels that time management is toughest for him, so we discussed some strategies for each section that would help cut down the amount of time he spends answering questions: in English, reading through the entire passage to get valuable context; in math, answering the easier and less labor-intensive questions first, and then getting to more difficult problems if time permits; in reading, organizing what order he would like to answer the questions for each passage and then skimming the passage to find those answers.

During today's session, the pupil and I began to work through practice problems under realistic time pressure. He shows improvement in the area of ACT English but needs further practice to maximize his score on this section. I have assigned him two timed sections (reading and English) from the practice guide as homework over the weekend. We will cover math and/or science during our next session.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Katie in Aurora, IL
In today's introductory session, the student and I reviewed the format and content of the SAT as well as his goals for our sessions together. We discussed the essential strategy for the reading comprehension section of the SAT and implemented this strategy on several U.S. and World Literature passages. We additionally discussed how to modify this strategy based off of passage type (i.e., paying attention to characters and their motives/descriptions in Lit. passages). I instructed the student to take a full reading comprehension section from a practice SAT exam, consciously employing the strategy we learned today. He is an astute learner and critical reader, and he adapted quickly to the strategies discussed.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Milan in Aurora, IL
In today's lesson, we primarily focused on the science portion at the start, and then shifted towards math in the second half of the session. In the first part of the session, most questions dealt with astronomy and understanding relationships in physics. The second half dealt with mostly inverse relations and a few algebra concepts.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Varuna in Aurora, IL
In today's session, the student and I went over several function notation problems. He said he wasn't ever exposed to these types of questions in class, but he grasped the content quickly. We spent about one hour doing practice math problems of this kind before moving onto writing. We worked on practice problems. I was completing them alongside the student so I could better understand his thought process and get him to the correct answer. He also mentioned needing help with the ACT, which is set for a date before the SAT. I told him to complete an ACT diagnostic exam and we'll review that exam in the next session. The math and reading/writing portions should be similar to the SAT.
