Test Prep Tutoring review by Laura in West Chicago, IL
The student and I spent our time this week focusing on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT exam. She continues to do practice sections between our sessions, which allows us to hone in on the questions that are giving her trouble. The student does great on questions that ask her directly about content or meaning (e.g. "What does the phrase x most nearly mean?"). The student has been working to think in a more detached way about the passage (NOT using her own perspective) which is great! Now, we're working on a new method of reading the text, that focuses not on understanding every word, but rather on 1) gaining a sense of the structure of the passage (e.g. this passage presents a theory, and then offers data supporting theory) and that 2) honing in on the specific moments in the text to which the test refers. The first requires her to step back from the details of the passage, the second asks her to use "blinkered vision" to hone in on the precise moment about which the question asks. This is a tricky skill, but will help her both move more quickly through this section of the test, and will give her more time to focus on relevant details without being distracted by other information. The student is certainly improving! I've asked her to keep working on vocab and on practice sessions -- and I've let her know that next week, we'll focus on reading strategies: learning to skim parts of the passage and picking out details.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Anne in West Chicago, IL
We did an extensive review of the ACT math section in preparation for the ACT exam that the student took the next day. We went over almost an entire math exam section and the student seemed very confident about many of the problems. She had the most trouble with concepts that we had not reviewed for a while, like trigonometry and solving for trigonometric functions. She did not have any trouble with problems including algebra and geometry, and had very little trouble with concepts in probability as well as percent problems and rate of change questions. We went over more test-taking strategies and talked about time-management on the exam. I also stressed the importance of "writing out" each question and thus visualizing the problem. This process of visualization can have dramatic effects on problem comprehension and is crucial for understanding conceptual problems, especially word problems and geometry problems. She has picked up this concept well, and has mastered the concept of visualizing the problem quite well. She has improved dramatically over the past weeks, and I strongly believe that her score on the ACT will be significantly improved.

Covered reading, writing, math sections related to the SAT. In math, the student worked on using the answer choices to understand how a problem wants him to approach it, or what strategy he is supposed to take. For next time, the student will finish reading portions for us to go over.
