Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by David in Hawaii
In this session I helped the student get ready for the week, looked over his grades, and helped him fix some spelling and structural errors on an essay he had written. While it's good to see his grades improving, I see that I need to put more focus on his science class; he didn't seem to have missing assignments, but his test and quiz scores definitely need improvement.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Klaire in Hawaii
In this session we worked on writing algebraic inequalities as expressions, as well as solving some of those expressions. We reviewed percentages, learned real-world practices such as calculating the tip for a server (might be a good thing to practice with his parents if they go out to eat), and discussed the goal for his math class (get an A), and that he has to turn in his work if he is going to achieve that goal. He had some trouble remembering how to interpret inequality signs and came up with a method to remember it (Pac-man eats the bigger value). We spent a half hour working on some reading comprehension as well -- we read a passage from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and reviewed new vocabulary, interpreted various sentences, and talked about how dialogue is sometimes written in certain dialects. Overall, he was engaged and cooperative, though a little reluctant to get started at first.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by William in Hawaii
In this session, he and I worked through his study guide and it focused on all aspects of triangle congruency. Specifically, we had to identify whether or not many pairs of triangles were congruent or not, and then we had to determine certain aspects of various triangle pairs given that the pairs were congruent. He was ready to go when I arrived, and his focus was sharp.

In this session, I helped the student with using MS Excel to accomplish some statistical analyses. The homework focused primarily on confidence intervals, adjusting confidence levels, and comparing groups. We will be meeting again on Monday evening.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Magdalena in Hawaii
In this session, I wanted to solidify the concepts that he struggled with on his geography test. I went over longitude and latitude with him, and then I had him identify cities by their coordinates. Then, we played a game of Battleship using longitude and latitude coordinates. After that, we did some more reading practice and finished with some math work finding equivalent fractions. From what I've observed, he picks concepts up fairly quickly but has trouble remembering them from session to session, so continued review and practice is helpful.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Brandon in Hawaii
In this session, she and I reviewed most of chapter 4 for her exam on Wednesday. This consisted of Riemann Sums, Definite Integrals, Indefinite Integrals, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and Physical Applications of Integrals. Overall, she had no major problems reviewing these concepts. I think any confusion may stem from visualizing and connecting the graphical and mathematical applications of a problem. More specifically, finding an integral and comparing that with accumulating positive or negative area underneath the curve. I believe, however, that she was able to get somewhat of a grasp and understand how it all connects, which in turn will help her on the exam. Otherwise, everything else was pretty intuitive for her, as she had minimal difficulty going over example problems for preparation. It was a good session, and I wish her the best on the exam!
