Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Patrick in Hawaii
In this session, we covered basic probability (e.g., union, intersection) and some discrete probability distributions (i.e., binomial, Poisson, and geometric). Some problems required constructing the probability distribution and others focused on exact probabilities. I demonstrated how to use MS Excel to obtain some of the probabilities because he was calculating probabilities by hand using a calculator that was not a scientific calculator. We are scheduled to continue getting him caught up in a session tomorrow night.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Jonathan in Hawaii
In this session, we covered material to help study for the student's upcoming quiz. We re-reviewed all the pages of her work exercises we have been working through and finished some review on the final topics. The main focus was on limit calculation and continuity of functions. She needed the most help with separating vertical and horizontal asymptote calculation. Initially, she was confusing properties of the two types of limits. Once we differentiated the two by their limit indexes, she calculated and solved the limits well. We also reviewed limits of trig-functions, as well as continuity properties of functions. Overall, she was able to explain the ideas, and solve the associated exercises. She needed some review on sin(a)/ax, but I pointed her to the associated exercises we solved for her to study before the quiz.

In this session, we covered some basic theory in solutions of differential equations and how to solve second order linear differential equations. The student was able to understand the specific material we covered and asked appropriate questions wherever she found it to be confusing. In the end, she definitely managed to get a lot out of the session.

In this session, we went over matrices. Specifically we learned how to multiply, add, and subtract matrices. We also figured calculated the determinants of 3x3 and 2x2 matrices. We used both methods for the 3x3 matrix. She had a great attitude toward the material, and I'm confident she will score highly on the quiz. This session was a win!

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Adrian in Hawaii
In this session, we went over some tips on how to graph multivariable functions - functions with two variables, in particular. We also went through what partial derivatives meant conceptually, and how to compute them. We also went through what the limit definition means in terms of multivariable functions.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Jeremy in Hawaii
In this tutoring session, the student worked on rearranging a quadratic function so that it matched the general equation we found for translating, stretching and inverting functions. This process allowed us to plot any quadratic function without the use of a calculator. We then used this to derive the quadratic formula. This derivation gave us a very powerful tool for solving quadratic function, but it also gave us simplifying insights into graphing quadratic functions.
