Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Izraelle in Minneapolis, MN
During this session, the student and I worked on concepts within cellular respiration. She was having the most difficulty understanding the processes within oxidative phosphorylation, so we went through the process step by step with a diagram. By the end of the session, she had a better understanding of the electron transport chain, and how it is used to create a large amount of ATP. We completed a few worksheets and some extra practice to help her to grasp these ideas.

Physiology Tutoring review by Teshome in Minneapolis, MN
Today, we started with a solubility product problem and discussed the effect of pH on solubility. Also, we solved a problem about selective precipitation and discussed how to determine the concentration of the minimum and maximum amount of precipitating reagent required to selectively isolate precipitate mixture of cations. The main topic of discussion for today was chemical thermodynamics. We discussed the three laws of thermodynamics and their application in determining the spontaneity of a process. We discussed how to calculate standard changes of enthalpy, entropy, and free energy from thermochemical data. We discussed how entropy is related to enthalpy and free energy.

Physiology Tutoring review by Judy in Minneapolis, MN
Today we mainly covered DNA transcription and translation. The student needs to make sure to remember that uracil (U) is only present in RNA and thymine (T) is only present in DNA. Terms like genotype, phenotype, and chromosome and their definitions are very important for this part of biology, and biology in general, so he should try to learn these so that he can understand the questions and answer properly. Understanding the steps of transcription and translation are also very important. We also talked about mutations, genetic engineering, and started discussing DNA replication. He had a good attitude throughout the session. He really seemed to take in information and was eager to explain concepts in his own words. In preparation for next session, he should review everything covered so far as the materials build on each other.

Physiology Tutoring review by Ron in Minneapolis, MN
Most of the concepts that we covered related to circuits, power, and energy. The twins had a test coming up so that was their biggest concern. They did really well for the most part when reviewing the Physics, as they had a pretty good grasp of the content and only needed help on a few of the more advanced formulas. After physics, I spent some time with the student looking over Trigonometry, since he has a test coming up. There were a lot of formulas and techniques that he has to memorize in order to do well, as he will need them in order to do the problem. We went over the techniques that may help him in a testing situation and I stressed that practicing these problems is the best way to get familiar with the formulas. Also, we made sure to identify some formulas and identities that are good things to write on the test first thing so that he has them right there on the front page and doesn't need to worry about forgetting them later on in the test. I didn't leave him with any extra practice since both of them already have a ton of extra problems to get them ready for the test. I did not see any scores or grades to note progress.

We covered circular motion, friction, and gravitational forces. The student breezed by this session. He didn't require any further explanation on any of the problems, and the problems he did in advance were all correct. He seems to be doing great!
