Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Joseph in Minneapolis, MN
The session began by having the student recreate the schematic and chart we created during our last session (re: digestive system). He was able to do the majority of it without assistance. He had more difficulty with the chart of the four basic nutrients; however, that is to be expected, as it involves more complex terminology. We went over it briefly again, and he knows that he will be required to recreate both charts during every session. We then reviewed ions and their effect on the human body (i.e., where they come from, where they are stored, and what happens when you don't have enough of them in your diet). From this, we introduced to the topic of homeostasis and how the body maintains it. We discussed positive and negative feedback loops and examples of both. We then concluded our session by introducing the cardiovascular system and basic blood typing. As this material is fairly complex, I decided to introduce the topic today without providing too much detail. We will revisit this chapter during our next session. The student has been assigned to read the chapter on homeostasis and be prepared to discuss it in detail. He should also be prepared to discuss the digestive system in greater detail. Of note, he stated that he completed the reading I assigned him previously and that he found it much more enjoyable.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Izraelle in Minneapolis, MN
During this session, the student and I completed a comprehensive packet on taxonomy. We looked at the different methods of classifying organisms, the scientists involved in these methods, and together we summarized the major topics in this unit. She has done a great job utilizing her notes and her book to be able to answer in depth, complex questions on this unit. She has a midterm coming up at the end of the week, so we again looked at the graphic organizer we created on the Kingdoms, and we reviewed the organizers we created for cellular respiration and photosynthesis earlier in the semester.

We reviewed the metric system prefixes used in SI units and covered the dissociation of Arrhenius acids and bases in aqueous solution, pH, solution stoichiometry and dilution of solutions. The student also worked on an assignment for his algebra class, representing the 12 numbers on a clock as various mathematical expressions.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Sandhya in Minneapolis, MN
We covered different phylums of animals. The student had some trouble with what some of the terminology was, but maintained a positive attitude towards the material. Some strategies were what questions to look for and how to study for the exam. Extra practice was the table we worked on together.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Marline in Minneapolis, MN
We went through biology. I helped him by quizzing him on bacteria and viruses. He needs to do more work outside of class and our sessions for the best results. We also spent some time on geometry, going through circles. I had him complete a worksheet on arcs and central angles.
