Tutoring review by Nick in Chanhassen, MN
The student and I went over his geometry homework. It was made up of parallelograms and the corresponding theorems. He was able to solve most of them on his own. There were a few where he was having difficulty with seeing the relationships connecting the given information to solve what the question was asking. He was very focused when doing his homework. Afterwards, I had him do a problem that combined right triangle relationships with the quadratic equation. He's still struggling quite a bit with this one. We've done it about 4 times now and he is improving with some scattered parts of the solution.

The student and I worked on basic derivative applications during this session. We practiced a number of problems from her homework to help prepare her for the test. She has a quiz on Monday and a test on Friday, and after the session, she feels far more prepared.

At this session, we reviewed linear systems in preparation for the student's quiz the following day. The quiz will cover solving linear systems using substitution and elimination. Because the student was comfortable solving numeric problems we focused on word problems. He has improved tremendously in regard to recognizing important information given in the problem. Though the student is still struggling with understanding what the question is asking him to solve. I suggested looking for buzz words presented in the problem to help him determine how to solve it. For example, if asked "How many people must be invited so both parties cost the same?" The phase "so both parties cost the same" mean set two equation equal to each and solve for the variable.

We covered the slope-intercept form, and the student became proficient with the topic after we discussed it and did some practice. For homework, I asked him to practice the slope-intercept form using an educational website. He has shown progress with the concepts being taught in class.

Today we studied factoring by grouping and did a short review of differences of squares. I feel like we made good progress. The student's biggest issue is retention, so my plan going forward is to assign more homework. He has started school already, and I believe that the additional work is necessary for his long term success.

Tutoring review by Adam in Chanhassen, MN
We reviewed before the student's third calculus midterm that he has tomorrow night. We discussed visualizing integrals based on the given function, and in general graphing an unknown function in general based on its numerical properties. We then also discussed optimization, and how the general pieces of optimization are some objective function you want to maximize/minimize, subject to any number of constraints on the solution. We did a few practice problems there. I think it helped solidify certain concepts for him, which is good.
