How can a tutor assist you in conquering Reading?

To advance in school, get into college, or start any career, your child needs to be proficient in reading. Literacy is taught as early as preschool, but the topics taught throughout school, dictated by the Common Core Standards for reading, cover what's absolutely necessary to know. Not everyone learns at the same pace, and many students work with a tutor to boost their skills. Varsity Tutors' educational directors may connect your student with skilled reading tutors in Minneapolis, MN. They are experienced instructors who may try to help with word recognition, decoding text, identifying the main idea, and getting on the path towards fluency.

These tutors may tend to the most basic learning needs, starting with connecting letters and sounds and recognizing words. Connecting sounds with words is essential; this may be a slow process, or your child may pick up on it quickly. If your student needs help correlating cause and effect, summarizing, or identifying antonyms and synonyms, their tutor may start by assessing what gaps need to be filled. Using the information gathered initially, they'll craft custom individualized learning plans that may be adapted along the way based on your child's pace and style of learning.

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Lindsey in Minneapolis, MN
This was one of the student's best sessions so far. I love that he is enthusiastic about game focused learning and finds it to be fun. He also seems to remember these words really well after we play the games a few times. He also did very well reading his book (he had read it a couple times before) and I am hoping that perhaps we can get him to work on books that are a bit longer. Perhaps not with more challenging vocabulary, but with more words.

Reading Tutoring review by Jenny in Minneapolis, MN
The student did a phenomenal job today! He worked on his writing by creating a list of things he was going to take on vacation in two weeks. We then completed two workbook pages (and he read all the directions!). He read three lists of sight words and even tried words that he didn't know. Then we finished the session with reading several pages of a book.

Reading Tutoring review by Catie in Minneapolis, MN
Today the student and I read a book at level K which I think is about her level. She read it with few errors and comprehended it for the most part. We talked about mixing up the b and the d, as well as some spelling errors. Capitalization also seems to be a problem. At this point I think that her writing is a larger problem than her reading ability.

Reading Tutoring review by Sophia in Minneapolis, MN
Read through all three lists and did gross alphabetization. Next we alphabetized within each of the 26 letters and the student read all of the words again. Way to go! I'm so proud of you!! We finished the book. Again, this is just a regular juvenile book, not a leveled school book. He was able to take his knowledge of letters & their sounds and sound out new words. He has shown consistent improvement and is definitely ready to move on to the next grade level! Yay!

Reading Tutoring review by Molly in Minneapolis, MN
Thursday we worked on a comprehension worksheet about the country of Greenland. I tested him on his sight words and gave him a new set of words to practice. I used the worksheet to show him how reading can teach us interesting information. He did a great job decoding large words. We are still working on vowel sounds. When he encounters a difficult vowel sound or combination of vowel sounds, I taught him about why those letters make those sounds.

Reading Tutoring review by Richard in Minneapolis, MN
We had identified three sounds to work on: -oa-, sh-, and -ed. The student has a fairly good concept of the last two, but needs future work on -oa-, reading it as a long "o". He's getting better at "attacking" words: breaking long words into manageable pieces by himself, and looking for familiar parts and sounds.
