How can a Latin tutor help you?

Latin is often considered to be a dead language. However, it is still very much alive and has a large number of uses, even in today's modern world. Learning Latin may help with decoding new English vocabulary, because the two languages share many prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. The language may also help you learn additional languages later, as the Romance languages evolved from Latin. Additionally, it allows you to learn about distant history right from the source by allowing you to read and translate original Latin texts.

Unfortunately, many students find Latin to be exceedingly difficult. Sometimes it seems more like a puzzle than a language to English speakers, because word order hardly matters less than in other languages as long as you include the right endings. Because of this, there are several dozen charts of word endings to be memorized and irregular words that don't fit any of the common patterns. This heavy memorization and dissimilar grammar leaves students frustrated and often unmotivated, making learning difficult.

Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Minneapolis, MN
This session, we started out with the student showing me a story in Latin he had written for a class project. As I looked through it, I saw a lot of small errors, so I had him take me through the story. We made corrections as we came to the problems, with me prompting him for what might be wrong and then having him think through how to fix it. This took some time, but had him doing a lot of thinking about the functions of the cases and about noun-adjective and noun-verb agreement. When we were done with this, we spent the rest of the time reviewing for his Geometry exam. A lot of the material in the review was over concepts they had studied quite a while ago, so he was somewhat rusty. We worked on factoring trinomials, solving quadratic equations, and the like, with a lot of repetition helping to make the various methods memorable.

Latin Tutoring review by Ralston in Minneapolis, MN
Focused on reviewing vocabulary and grammar from recent chapters in addition to doing some sentence translation and reviewing grammar from recent older chapters in the student's textbook. It is necessary that the student is constantly going over his basic grammar as he is forgetting and still making silly mistakes when it comes to translating. He needs to slow down and take his time when doing so. Ideally, reviewing basic grammar will make it so that it is second nature to him, removing a lot of errors.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in Minneapolis, MN
In our session, the stunt and I completed three prose composition sentences. First, I quizzed him over Latin's six noun cases and what each case signifies. We reviewed the cases that he had trouble remembering and then began the prose composition exercise. For each sentence, I asked him to identify the subject(s), verb(s), direct object(s), and indirect object(s). I also asked him to identify the case, number, and gender of nouns and person, number, and tense of verbs. As we worked through this exercise, I emphasized the proper word order for Latin sentences: verbs come last and adjectives follow, rather than precede, the nouns they modify. I also reviewed how to find a verb's stem in order to help the student build the correct verb forms in different tenses. His parsing continues to improve!

The student has a quiz next week: the first part of our session was a grammar and vocabulary review. He did very well on the review. In honor of the Ides of March, he had a reading to do about Julius Caesar. His homework is to keep studying for his quiz on Monday.
