How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

The SAT is a three-hour test that assesses your child's skill in writing and language, math, and analytical writing, which is an optional section and adds an additional 55 minutes. In 2016, the test was altered to have new features, such as the expanded test results. Each section provides composite scores, subscores for specific skills, and cross-test scoring for certain analytical skills. Accepted by most post-secondary institutions, the test allows schools to predict a student's success in undergraduate programs. Proper planning may be the key to passing the SAT test; however, traditional classroom-based prep programs may be too fast paced to allow for thorough understanding. Varsity Tutors may help your child find an expert SAT tutor in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who may teach your child all the skills and strategies you need to potentially improve on the SAT.

An SAT tutor in Minneapolis may offer your child a more individualized, engaging, and structured learning experience. Your child is matched with a tutor based on their personal learning style, testing schedule, schools of choice, and more.

Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Matthew in Minneapolis, MN
The student and I covered the Writing Section of the SAT today. We looked primarily at two question types: improving paragraphs, and Error IDs. She proved apt at the improving paragraph questions. We off set this with a few questions from the Reading and Math portions of Practice Tests from the guidebook. The areas that gave her the most trouble were Error IDs, particularly in instances of idiomatic speech. We focused on reappearing errors, subject verb agreement, gerunds and participles. Another issue she had had simply to do with her mastery of English. For example: once she knew the meaning of the word 'omit' she was able to answer improving paragraph questions with answers that included the phrase. To combat this, I tried to show her as many questions as possible, just so she'd accumulate some definitions.

SAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Minneapolis, MN
Today the student and I went over test-taking strategies for each of the different subsections. He had previously taken a practice test so throughout the session we went through the questions he got incorrect. I showed him how I would approach the problems using different strategies in order for him to better understand the process. He did very well in math and seemed to grasp the concepts very easily. Although he struggled some in the writing and reading sections, towards the end of our session he seemed more confident with those problems.

SAT Tutoring review by Grant in Minneapolis, MN
The student and I worked on SAT I material, focusing on the reading and math portions, which his family says would be the most important. He says he has taken 2 or more PSAT's in the past, but does not remember much about his scores. He said he may be able to retrieve them off the computer. I walked him through several practice problems to gauge his level. He seems to have good reasoning capability on the reading portions.

SAT Tutoring review by Daniel in Minneapolis, MN
Worked on primarily reading with some discussion of the writing section to complement the almost pure math coverage of the last session. We went through sentence completion, going through some vocabulary and ensuring solid strategies for approaching problems and looking for recognition in unknown words using known words (by looking for similarity between roots of words). We then went into passage reading where we reviewed methods for analyzing text and getting those answers. We focused on taking the perspective of the authors in order to draw conclusions about similar topics from different point of views (i.e. passage comparison questions). Finished by going over writing section in preparation for the practice (timed) test she will be taking between our next session. Went over essay formatting, introductions, counterarguments, etc.

SAT Tutoring review by Kim-Yen in Minneapolis, MN
We worked on the writing session, focusing on the essay portion today. We started by having her write a sample essay under SAT conditions to see where her strengths and weaknesses are. She is a strong writer, but mainly needs to focus on choosing specific examples for her essay instead of making more vague statements. We brainstormed more specific examples she could have used in her essay, and then outlined arguments and examples for other sample essay questions provided in the book. We spent most of the time on the essay, and discussed other essay-writing strategies, but we finished with some brief review of the multiple choice section of the writing session. Based on the number of questions in each section that she got correct, she is already improving!

The student and I spent about half our time today working on math problems, then spent the rest of the time with sentence completion, improving sentences, and essay writing. He wrote his best essay yet today.
