Physics Tutoring review by Alexandria in Frankfort, IL
Our session today was a review for a sound exam in physics, and we worked primarily on the different types of sound waves and what a positive or negative velocity will do in forms of shifts in the sound waves. We studied the Doppler effect and looked at the equations to solve for the shifts in wave form. The shifts in color, red or blue shifts, were a big focus as we discussed the cosmic microwave background and predicting the outcome with moving objects. We worked on several worksheets that she had for review and homework, and we spent the majority of our time focusing on short answer and definition questions that were sure to come up on the exams. We practiced solving the corresponding equations with each concepts that we defined, and she did exceptionally well on all of her definitions and short answers. She did have some difficulty in remembering the corresponding equations, but we worked on a systematic problem solving approach that requires her to write the equations for each problem helping her to remember them and develop good problem solving techniques. Even though she did not finish all of the worksheets, we agreed to discuss any questions that she may still have after trying to complete them on her own.

Physics Tutoring review by Arianna in Frankfort, IL
Although the student was still on her winter break when we met, she wanted to get ahead and start learning the upcoming unit. The unit includes circular kinematics, circular motion, and the continued application of Newton's second within this context. I discussed with her the fundamentals of these topics and we focused on the more challenging material that often presents difficulty. For example, many students think that centripetal force is its own force and should be included on a free body diagram, but it is actually net force that results in an object having circular motion. I went over a few practice problems with her, including the typical roller coaster problem, where we discussed the difference in the normal force at the top and bottom of a loop. She seemed to understand the difference pretty well after our review. We also addressed other practice problems provided to her by her class. These involved the circular motion of objects sitting on a second rotating object. There were both conceptual and mathematical problems, well rounded practice. She and I are going to meet again after she has had a few classes under her belt after winter break.

Physics Tutoring review by David in Frankfort, IL
The student had a worksheet from an in-class lab relating the force used to pull back a rubber band to the projectile that would theoretically be pushed by it.
