Miramar, FL French tutoring
The student and I worked on both his homework and preparing him for an upcoming test. We both kept in good spirits even though his work consists of the same concepts we have been developing since the beginning of our time together- the complements d'objet. To keep things lively, I pepper his corrections (or even totally correct answers) with anecdotes about certain verbs, expressions, or vocabulary. I spoke with him about the hypothetical system in French as well as gave a demo of the future and the conditional tenses. He seemed to understand them very well. He has a much deeper understanding of how the language works now. He has not had a lot of grades for us to monitor his learning quantitatively but my hope is that by showing him some more complex ideas, he might be inspired to take another year of French-I think it would be awesome for him and his college prospects to have 4 years of high school French under his belt! We worked with the pronouns y and en specifically, and he did a great job. He really has a handle on how these two prepositions behave when they act as pronouns-what do they stand for (location vs. quantity) and how can I employ them? He also did a great job putting the events of a short film they watched in order. Finally, we did a mock speaking test. I asked the question "How would you solve the problem of hunger?" Then we practiced planning an answer-a VERY important step in speaking tests. We do this by jotting down any vocabulary, verbs, or phrases that come to mind that could be useful in responding.

Today the student and I mainly went over what would be covered on her French final. Her final will cover topics from this semester only, so I will be creating a study guide for her while she works on her note cards and other study materials from class. Her final will not have a writing portion, but all multiple choice. Our goal is for the student to reach "B" level. She shared her biggest concerns for her final, so we will be focusing extra on those plus all other topics in our next session.

We continued reviewing the same concepts we went over during our last session, which were household chores vocabulary and prepositions. The student still needed to work on the prepositions, but she has improved greatly on the vocab. Finding mnemonic devices to help remember the vocabulary seems to have worked well for her, so we spent some time this week doing the same thing for the prepositions. I hope that her upcoming quiz this week will reflect the progress I think she is making.

The student completed 6 different written exercises containing verb/ subject (pronoun agreements) for regular and some irregular verbs. She completed one exercise consisting of forming/ writing complete sentences, including subject, verb, and predicate. We reviewed all content for a reading and critical thinking exercise designed to have the student understand/ interpret text, and arrive at a final conclusion. We also reviewed all present tense forms of verbs. She had a challenge with some pronoun/ verb agreements. Her attitude continues to be positive, and focused.

The student and I reviewed adding and subtracting negative numbers, using the distributive property, and simplifying algebraic expressions. She handled the material well. The only concern I had with her was that she wanted to solve the questions in her head using mental, math and this often caused her to make simple mistakes. I made sure she started writing her work out clearly as to avoid mistakes.
