How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is administered by individual private schools to 8th graders looking to apply to their institution of choice. Your student has two-and-a-half hours to complete the roughly 300-question exam, which is scored from 200-800 points. The exam covers a number of subjects. If any academic subject challenges your child, it may greatly affect their score. Preparing for the HSPT may be time-consuming, since your student needs to understand not just language, math, reading, quantitative, and verbal skills, but also working with the test format. For example, they must complete each question and section in a reasonable amount of time to stay on pace. Missing questions may lower their score. In the case of the HSPT, practice makes perfect. Varsity Tutors may help you find a professional HSPT tutor in Louisville, KY, who may offer your child engaging study sessions to make the most use of their time.

Fitting in enough prep time with a full set of classes and after-school activities may be difficult. Each tutor is flexible. They may meet after school or on the weekend. If your child is more comfortable learning at home, the tutor may travel, or meet in any other convenient place. Online learning sessions, in which your child and tutor meet face-to-face using a live learning platform, are also available. A range of study resources are available on the web as well.

HSPT Tutoring review by Phoebe in Louisville, KY
After introductions, we reviewed all of the questions the student answered incorrectly on the Quantitative section of her practice test. We also reviewed key strategies for manipulating and comparing numbers, as well as identifying patterns. We then worked through practice problems for the Verbal section and did extra practice on the analogies portion, as that was the most difficult. She has strong underlying skills and was able to pick up concepts quickly.

HSPT Tutoring review by Naama in Louisville, KY
Today, we moved on to specifically address the Quantitative Skills section by discussing the categories of number manipulation and geometric and non geometric comparisons, and then we refreshed the skills and concepts necessary for these problems, as well as general strategies like careful reading of the questions and answer choices, estimating, and setting up proportions. We finished by taking the assessment exam mixed practice questions and going over the answers. Refreshing the concepts for geometric formulas and exponents was very helpful!

Today, we started off by reviewing volume and some number operations. We looked at synonyms and antonyms as well. The twins will continue to improve their vocabulary and try to eliminate as many answer choices as possible. We ending by looking at several passages and focusing on passage reasoning. The twins did very well on eliminating answers, which allowed them to answer the questions more effectively.

HSPT Tutoring review by Alexander in Louisville, KY
Tonight, the student and I practiced math by running a full practice math test. I only allotted her a proportional fraction of the full test's time-limit to each question, and then I asked her to move on. Pacing is something she needs to work on, and today was a step towards that. She did not finish all of the questions in their allotted time, but with time left over from faster completions, I allowed her to go back and answer what she could. Her accuracy is not reflective of her competence to complete the exam, but her pacing on it is indicative of a need to practice for speed. We were able to do extra practice on difficult problem types, which seemed to help, especially in the case of word problems.

HSPT Tutoring review by Margaret in Louisville, KY
The student is showing much more engagement in tutoring sessions now that we have had a couple of sessions, and he has gotten to know me better. The library setting seems to work really well for him. He and I spent the bulk of the session really working on his essay writing, which he seems to struggle with. (I sent him home with a practice prompt to complete over the holiday break.) He also seems to struggle a bit with reading tests online, so this week I sent him PDF copies of practice tests/exercises for him to complete over the break as well. We also spent time working on verbal practice using proper grammar. I wanted him to go over all the common misspelled/misused words and write sentences for me!

HSPT Tutoring review by Kassandra in Louisville, KY
The student and I went over the practice verbal questions I assigned her during our last visit; she did very well on those problems. I also had her practice more analogies under time constraints to simulate the conditions of the test and get her used to test-taking strategy. To help her with the verbal questions, I showed her how to utilize quick drawings to help her understand verbal comparisons. I also had her practice some reading comprehension questions, which I think she could use some additional practice in. I assigned her a set of practice problems for homework.
