How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

American College Testing, or ACT, is a college entrance exam that tests students' English, reading, math, and science skills, and sometimes their writing ability. Your child might be encouraged when they see that this exam is multiple-choice. The test, which is given over two hours and 55 minutes, is nothing to get complacent about. There is a lot of preparation and studying involved. Your student's time may be stretched thin, but an expert ACT tutor in Miami, FL, may work at a time that is most convenient for you.

With the tutor's flexibility, it is easy to set up lessons that don't conflict with your child's classes and after-school activities. The instructor may meet anytime during the evening, or even on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. They may come to your home, if that's where your child is most comfortable learning, or meet your child at a library or designated place in their school. Face-to-face online lessons are also possible using a live learning platform, which has been designed to simplify scheduling sessions.

The student and I met this morning at a restaurant to go over the homework she completed. We spent the majority of our time reviewing math concepts she struggled with on homework. We also discussed the best strategy for the reading portion, for her. She feels she does better when she reads the question and then searches for an answer in the text, rather than reading the entire passage, because doing so is "information overload" for her. We tested that theory on two reading sections, and she did improve. I did tell her to keep reading as homework, because that will only help those skills. I assigned science and English homework.

The student seems to have all the basics down at this point. She is utilizing the tips and strategies we have discussed. Every once in a while she will stumble on a math problem, but that is getting rarer. We spent this session working on some of her time issues. I wanted her to get a feel for how long it was taking her to answer each question and to read the passages. She tended to run slightly over time, so we are going to focus our sessions on fixing those problems.

We reviewed the reading and science that the student completed independently. We then finished those science and reading sections and went over any questions that the student missed. We also brainstormed for a practice essay.

The student is making progress! He had worked through a reading section and was feeling a little low about his score. We talked about the time constraints of the reading and the strategies for handling them, and he started to see why he was answering some questions incorrectly. He's generally understanding what he reads so he goes for the answer that is right. Focusing on precisely what the question is asking and being very careful about the wording of the answers will be a focus going forward. We also did a quick review of science and English.
