What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that if you take what you like outside of the classroom inside, you will be sure to thrive!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session with a student, we will get to know each other. I will ask simple questions about how you like to learn and what are your goals for our tutoring sessions. From there, we will map out a plan and achieve those goals!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by giving them specific assignments that help train the brain to think and the student to use critical thinking in order to get to an answer.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by incentives discussed with the student beforehand if they reach certain goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has problems understanding a concept, we will look at it together, find where they get lost, and work together to get over that bump.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by instructing them on how to find the key words in a passage and understand what those words mean.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I found that if you work beside a student and go step by step, they usually retain the information more.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would bring factors from their life that are interesting to them inside the tutor session to spark an interest between the subject and the student.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I will give tests, and ask a lot of questions during a tutoring session.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build a student's confidence in a subject by never telling them they are wrong, but showing them how to find the correct answer.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by a basic posttest that will show me the type of questions they are struggling with.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring to each student's needs by changing the style. It could be more hands-on, or more independent, depending on the student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I typically use whiteboards, calculators, a lot of colors -- anything to keep the student engaged.
