Woodridge World Literature Tutoring FAQ
Studying World Literature presents a student with numerous challenges. Unlike courses that look at the literature of a certain country, time period, genre, or theme, World Literature courses are free to run the gamut of works when designing their curricula. Literary works may be selected that are intertwined with cultural traditions and histories with which you are unfamiliar. In this case, you will be challenged both to read and understand the work itself, as well as to learn to appreciate the specific cultural milieu in which it was written. Historical events and cultural knowledge are important in ordinary literature classes, but they may become especially important aspects of a World Literature course, as your understanding of a literary work needs to evolve alongside your knowledge of its context. History is an important element of literature, as most well-known literary pieces are based on one historical event or another. By studying the historical events and the time periods in which they were written, you are more able to understand the context of the literary piece and appreciate its significance. Additionally, many of the works you read may be translations from the language in which they were originally written. A study of the connotations of the original text may be in order for you to best appreciate the themes, content, and the message of the story. Meeting these challenges and learning to read and analyze texts outside of the Western canon of familiar works is a crucial part of becoming a well-rounded reader and in gaining an accurate perspective of the literary world. World Literature tutoring can really help you deal with the complexities of this rich and deep subject.

Recent Woodridge World Literature Tutoring Session Notes
We finished reviewing lesson 16 today, and I gave her the extra practice to work on before her test tomorrow. We also worked on her writing assignment that I had given her as homework from the previous class. The student asked that I give her extra writing practice to work on over the break.
Today I helped the student clean out and organize his English folder. He bundled older, finished assignments together and separated newer, in-progress ones. We reviewed the novel he's reading; Specifically the main characters' names, in preparation for the quiz he's getting Friday 12/20. He remembered the names a little better when I had him write them down. We made a "To Do" plan for the rest of the week: studying for the quiz, reviewing the list of literary terms his teacher gave him, and preparing for his upcoming lesson on Intentional Fragment Paragraphs.
We reviewed critical reading techniques and writing strategies today. We read through the syllabus for the student's upcoming English class for next semester, created our own schedule for tutoring sessions compiled a list of topics to focus on and how to best approach the topics according to how he learns best.
This session we began by covering the essays he wrote for me over the past week since we met. He seemed to have mostly mastered the structure of the kinds of essays he should be writing. After detailing the corrections he should have made, we moved into reading and sentence correction. We discussed grammatical rules, as well as tips for guessing well, and reading the answers correctly. By the end of the session he seemed to master it.
We did some work developing the student's reading comprehension and ability to describe what he's reading. We followed that up with some descriptive writing. I'm encouraging him to do more creative writing to expand his vocabulary and ability to share ideas.
We did worksheets on grammar (pronoun case, prepositional phrases, subject/predicate, etc.), and she did extremely well with most of it. She needed review but was much quicker with the subject/predicate work than previously. We also worked on making her notes more efficient and effective, both for reading passages and listening. She took short quizzes based on her notes, and did quite well.
