Tutoring review by Tessa in Jennings, MO
I brought the student a book today from the "Moomin" series of novels. I left the book with him, along with a writing assignment if he'd prefer to write, with the recommendation that he reads or writes for 15-20 minutes a day. We finished working on a unit about rhymes. He really seemed to enjoy rhyming words, almost as much as math! He completed the unit by writing a short story about sheep. Writing is the hardest for him, but I feel that it will get easier the more he reads. We started reading the book I left for him together. Although some of the words were difficult to pronounce, he did very well at sounding them out. I think the Moomin books will be good for him, because the author does a wonderful job of explaining complex words and concepts, for example she explains what a philosopher is and does. These books have small pictures to help guide him off of all comic books. As I said, 15-20 minutes each day of reading or writing will really help him.

Tutoring review by Surina in Jennings, MO
We went over a diagnostic test, and the student went through the entire test while I watched and took notes as he voiced his thought process. Afterwards, we went through the answers and I walked him through my thought process for the answers he got wrong so that he could gain another perspective. After that, we used the SAT tools to go over questions for humanities passages because those are the ones he struggles the most with.

Tutoring review by Jeff in Jennings, MO
The student has a Ch. 4 test tomorrow. This test will cover non-linear regression modeling and two-way table probability. We spent the time going over several practice tests covering these concepts. Her instructor was already teaching things from Chapter 5, so she needed a refresher on all the concepts. She was having the most trouble on back-transforming the linearized regression model into a non-linear model to make predictions. We worked on several of these problems for power law, exponential, and other nonlinear models. We also reviewed the process to select the best model for a set of data. She seemed confident with the material by the end of the session. I gave her several other practice tests that she could run through on her own to test her knowledge. I also learned she got a 5 out of 5 on her last quiz.

I went over problems on the student's first test, covering the Law of Total Probability and Bayes' theorem, continuous and discrete distributions of one and two random variables, and expectation and variance. He has a very good understanding now of how to work these problems.

Tutoring review by Erin in Jennings, MO
I went through some proofs the student had on proving triangles congruent and then using that congruency to prove that other sides and angles are congruent. Since we finished that early, I also helped her review vocabulary words from the book Frankenstein that she had a test on the next day.

The student completed a practice test. Her mother informed me that she seems to be improving on the reading and vocab sections, so we focused on math today, covering subjects that haven't been taught yet at her school.
