Tutoring review by Katie in Frostburg, MD
We reviewed how to solve systems of equations through graphing, making a table, and substitution. We discussed when to use graphing versus substitution or using one to check the other. The student did a great job with graphing and she has really improved on this. The student is aware of areas she improved upon and notices her strengths, which is a great thing!

Tutoring review by Andrew in Frostburg, MD
The student's class finished all of the material covered in chapter 4 of her textbook; for her next class period, she was assigned problems out of the chapter review. These problems covered linear equations and linear inequalities in both numerical and word problem format. She again had no trouble moving through the numerically given problems, and she has a very strong grasp of all of the algebra involved in solving linear equations/inequalities. We spent the majority of this session going over the word problems and devising a proper method to help her when she encounters future problems on her own. In class they discussed four very helpful, major steps to follow when solving word problems: assign the variable, design the equation/inequality, solve it for the variable and then finally write an answer statement to address the problem's central question. For every word problem, these are great steps to follow and will intuitively lead her in the right direction. However, the second step of designing an equation is often difficult and may require serious critical thinking. In order to make the task easier, we expanded this second step into a process of its own: breaking down the word problem in a piecewise fashion, that is, approaching the word problem sentence by sentence and piece by piece, rather than attempting to consolidate all of the available information in a single step. It greatly simplifies problems if we are able to record all of the given relationships in terms of the variable; this may require several steps of documentation. We were able to practice these steps and this method for several problems. She has a test coming in the following week, so she will have time to practice before we next meet, and in our next session, we will be able to review all of the material in depth and continue practicing so she feels completely comfortable with all of the content.

Tutoring review by Samuel in Frostburg, MD
The student and I worked more on factoring polynomials, quadratic equations in particular. She is really getting the hang of this, which will be extremely helpful in high school. Her algebra is still solid, so she just needs to focus on the new techniques and theorems she learns to solve more complex problems involving polynomials and functions. We worked through some of her homework and her class work and I feel she can perform well on her exam next week if she just practices a few more problems and encounters more iterations of the same polynomial fraction addition and subtraction problems that we worked on together.

Tutoring review by Holly in Frostburg, MD
We covered coterminal angles, finding the domain of a function, and some of the student's current work in AP English Literature and Composition. Initially, the student seemed to be struggling the most with applying earlier concepts to the more advanced material she is learning in her pre-calculus class. With English, she seemed to struggle the most with transitions and flow. She was open to improving in these areas, and she quickly grasped concepts that we reviewed in the session. I suggested that she work on problems in her book and do them multiple times so that she is able to do them on a quiz. I also suggested that she work on using more transitions to improve the flow of her writing. At the end of the session, we went over more pre-calculus problems, and she seemed to understand how to do them. She said that she better understood the concepts and felt more prepared for her quiz.
