I worked with the student on two of his assignments that focused on conic sections. The first assignment was all parabolas in standard form (with a, h, and k). We went over how to find the vertex, the focus, and the directrix. We also reasoned through how you would be able to tell if it is a vertical or horizontal parabola, and what would cause it to face the other direction. The next assignment looked at the rest of the conic sections: hyperbolas, ellipses, and circles. He grasped the circles very quickly, since they are pretty simple. The hyperbolas and ellipses took some more research on my own part, but we worked through it together.

The student is studying for a test. He had a review sheet. The area he wanted to start with was solving the equations for an exact value by using the trig identity equations. We talked about how these are a puzzle and may take a couple of approaches to solve. Also looked at determining the quadrant, solving for the other trig values, converting between radians & degrees, and determining reference angle.
Ended by looking at the student's chemistry. His question was about equilibrium and calculating it. He picked a problem he hadn't gone through and we did it together. By the end he said it made more sense.

We scheduled this session specifically so the student would practice the material from her exam. The exam consisted of solving inequalities through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. She had two practice sheets which I selected problems from. I lead her through the easy problems first, which she understood after we discussed when you should or should not fill in the circle on the graph. We then focused on every individual thing that could possibly trip her up, such as graphing negative numbers. The hardest part for her was to remember to reverse the direction of the inequality when she multiplied or divided by negatives. Once she got this down, she was able to solve at least one of the most complex problems on her own before I left. We will have one more meeting before her retake exam.

Today the student and I continued working on fractions and decimals. I think in school right now he is going over simple number theory and place value, but after his teacher finishes with that topic they will start with adding and subtracting decimals so we have been working on that the last few weeks. He is very confident in his ability to add and subtract decimals and he is rather good at the subject too. For that reason, I we have moved on to multiplying and dividing decimals which he already has a good handle on as well. Today, we also started adding fractions with different denominators. He likely won't see this topic until next year but I can tell he likes the challenge.

Today, we used the differentiable formula to figure out derivatives of various functions. I gave the student many practice problems so he can solve the problems without any mistakes. Next, we graphed the first and second derivatives of the original function. I showed him a good tip on how to do the problems quicker and gave him a reference page in case he forgot how to do the problem. I think he will do well on his upcoming exam.

We continued with the Law of Sines and ambiguous cases, given two sides and one angle, to find whether there are no, 1, or 2 solution(s). Afterwards, we went through the Law of Cosines chapter. The student understood the concept and just needs to practice with the formulas. We used the Law of Sines and Cosines, respectively, to solve problems related to solving a triangle and calculating perimeter or areas after finding the necessary dimensions. We began reviewing this unit to prepare for the unit exam next session. I asked her to practice with tangent and the ratio of sides, and she will practice more with the Law of Cosines.
