The student and I finished the science practice passage. I emphasized that he should approach the introductory information with an analytical eye. He should understand the experiments, note trends, and be able to jot down notes that allow him to refer to his annotations rather than the text. He should also fully understand the question before reading the answer choices, as sometimes they influence his decision making. The student should do a few practice passages tomorrow morning, focusing on close reading and analyzing the data.

Today we covered an additional set of practice problems, focusing on questions the student asked for help with. This was mostly abstract logic and complex word problems. I have noticed a significant improvement in how she approaches complex math problems, especially with regards to how she creates equations from word problems and the speed at which she can tackle problems. Additionally, I have noticed a huge improvement in her confidence when tackling difficult problems. For future sessions, I would like to put a little more emphasis into critical reading and writing strategies now that we have a solid foundation in the math sections. For homework, I instructed her to work through a practice critical reading section from any of the practice tests, and to mark any of the questions she would like to review. Additionally, she needs to make more vocabulary flash cards for her homework.

We started the session by discussing the Science section of the ACT and the general strategy for doing well on that. We then spent the rest of the time going over Math problems, mainly word problems. We discussed how to figure out what information is needed to answer the problem, what information is given, and how to follow small paths or steps to get to the information we identified as necessary for solving the problem. We looked at how to translate the words into equations and drawings and how to then use those to take some sort of step forward, realizing that even if we don't see the connection between some action that we can take and the final answer then when we finish that action we will almost certainly be one step closer and then be able to see how to proceed to the next step. The student has definitely improved over these sessions and I wish her much luck on the test!
