Test Prep Tutoring review by Priyanka in McHenry, IL
I met with both students today. Since they had been previously focusing on grammar, we started out by doing some practice problems to ensure that they had no remaining questions. They both have made significant gains in their grammar skills. We went over some new concepts (either-or; neither-nor), commonly mistaken words (accept vs except; effect vs affect), and did practice questions together. Then we went over geometry; some common formulas and completed a practice worksheet I created for them. They seemed to have a good grasp of these topics and were having more issues with probability questions. We attempted to address some of these questions, especially those involving integer counting. Lastly, we went over tactics for how they should approach the essay - the big issue for both involved comprehension of what exactly the question or prompt was asking. This issue of English comprehension also made it difficult for them to make progress in the reading and fill in the blank vocabulary sections. We talked through a couple practice essays together, practicing how they would come up with a thesis and subsequent examples. We discussed a strategy plan for how they could structure their next few weeks of independent study.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Rachael in McHenry, IL
At the beginning of the session we reviewed what the student should be focusing on in the remaining weeks before test day; we also discussed the possibility of signing up for the January test and/or prepping/taking the ACT, which might be a better test in capturing her academic potential. Today we reviewed the importance of building vocabulary and some strategy for how she could best be motivated to continue learning new words in ways that would stick. She will select 5 words/day that she will either use in a sentence or connect with a person who will then quiz her. We also began working through another set of practice sentence completion questions using new timing and overall testing strategies, as well as going through math questions that she had answered incorrectly during a previous practice set. Her homework is to work on her vocab and build a list of books/movies/media/current events/etc. from which she can easily draw examples for a variety of essays.

We spent most of the time working on geometry. Because this is all new to him, we went slowly with lots of practice. Worked on perimeter and area of rectangles, squares, parallelograms, and circles. Then moved on to volume: cubes, cylinders, pyramids (only began pyramids). Rather than move on, he wanted to practice more, so we did. We tried a few word problems, and he was getting it. For homework, he will look up problems online for practice.

The student and I had another session today. We are still going through the ACT Math portion using flashcards by concept to review and learn. We started where we left off in Trigonometry. We talked about sines and cosines. He seems to be getting much more comfortable with them, but we need to make sure that he's still careful with directions and reads them fully. There were a couple times when he calculated the sine when the question required the cosine. After trigonometry we moved onto algebra and specifically functions. I don't think he had seen nested functions before (f(g(x))), so he got flustered when he attempted the problem. I explained how to deal with these functions in a few different ways, and after a couple minutes he understood. We did several more of the same type of questions until he was more comfortable with the concept. Something the student needs to work on is writing out his work more. He attempts to do the problem in his head, but a lot of these problems are too complicated for that. He needs to write out the problem and go through the problem carefully in order not to make any minor mistakes like dropping a negative. I look forward to our session on Friday.
