Session Summaries by College Essays Tutors

College Essays Tutoring review by Hannah in McHenry, IL
The student and I began the session by working with some vocabulary words that we have been collecting. I quizzed him on the definitions, and then I had him write some sentences to practice the meaning of the words in context. Next, we went through some of the practice questions that we did in the previous session and discussed how he arrived at the answers he did. Then, we practiced some time management strategies and discussed the differences between reading, skimming, and scanning. Finally, he completed another practice reading passage with questions. I gave him a little extra time to complete the activity, and he answered nine of the ten questions correctly. This leads me to believe that time management is the area in which he struggles the most, so we will continue to work on that in the coming sessions. For next time, I asked him to read more of Tom Sawyer, paying attention to words he does not know and figurative language.

The student and I completed the homework that was previously assigned since he didn't do that. It was a good chance to review. Then he read Chapter 3 out loud to me, which worked on his oral fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. He was very proud that he learned a new word (wadded). His oral reading miscues mostly occur when the sentences are lengthy or phrased in an unfamiliar way. He tries to make sense of it too quickly. More work will be needed there. He is a very friendly, talkative, eager learner who has a lot of background knowledge that he applies to his reading. He was engaged, playful, eager, and polite during the session. He is a great student to tutor.

The student and I completed the second chapter of our novel that we had started yesterday. He is doing a great job. We are taking care to note the important points of the plot without getting bogged down by the challenging vocabulary. He also started working on, and almost completed, his chapter summary page for this chapter. He seems to be interested in this book and eager to find out what happens next.

The student and I composed a recommendation letter for one of her martial arts teachers today. We started by talking about him, and I asked her a lot of questions about what he's like and how he helps the students at her school. I took notes while she spoke. We then organized the points into categories about what he does, how he does it, and how he adds to the school. Next, I asked her to put each of the points into complete sentences. We also rearranged a few of the points for flow. Next, she put these sentences into paragraphs, by adding transitions and deleting repetitive concepts. We also edited the sentences and added a few details for clarity. She regularly read the sentences out loud so that we were certain that they flowed together well. Finally, we added a final request to the reader and proofread the letter once more. She did a great job today!

The student and I constructed a Fourth of July book to enhance his reading skills. He identified consonants and worked on identifying correct consonant sounds. He completed missing consonant sounds in sample words and identified correct sounds. We played a phonics game with flashcards to reinforce the consonant sounds learned today. He is making great progress and is eager to learn.
