Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Hannah in McHenry, IL
The student and I began the session by going over the homework that I left for him for the week. He did a really great job writing the alternate ending to the book he read, and he finished The Martian Chronicles. Then, we worked on the science section of the ACT, and we read a bit about the scientific method and reasoning. Finally, he did another practice reading section from the ACT. Using the four step basic approach, he got scores much higher than he had using his own approach. I left him with a few activities to complete for homework.

The student and I began working on her summer reading project. We read a few chapters of the novel, Stargirl, and worked together to fill out a chart I created to help her with the project. She is to write down all major characters and characteristics as she reads, and give a brief summary of each chapter as she finishes the reading. We also discussed taking notes and underlining (or using the hashtag strategy), when reading to help with comprehension. She plans to continue reading a few more chapters on her own before our next session.

The student and I began working on sounds today using the reading program I chose. We did "mmm" (m), "sss" (s), and "aaa" (short a). We worked on sounding out words and listening for these sounds in words we know. We also practiced writing each of these sounds. The student was energetic and attentive. He is a motivated boy.

The student and I began working on writing today. We discussed ideas and he created a web about gorillas with ideas to write about. We read some books about gorillas to get more information and generate more ideas. Next session, we will discuss organization and researching information. We really focused on fluency (and using an inside reading voice) when we did free read. He can read with fluency, but he gets excited and his fluency declines. We will continue working on fluency.

The student and I briefly reviewed how his English exam went this morning. We then dove into his history paper and went over sources, pulling out relevant quotes, and then he re-wrote his historiography portion of the paper.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Nicholas in McHenry, IL
The student and I briefly went over her work from the last session, and then I let her take 45 minutes (a standard class block for her in school) to write an essay, the topic of which we briefly discussed beforehand. It was a very challenging topic for an impromptu assignment, and the work that she did showed progress and improvement. I'm hopeful that a simpler, more standard in-class essay shouldn't be too difficult for her. Her biggest problems with timed writing seem to be making sure she makes her points clearly and explicitly and supporting every claim with evidence. I'm brainstorming ways to help her with this. The bones of her essay and her thought process are solid.
