Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Patrick in Massachusetts
The student and I worked on identifying place values and filling in corresponding decimal amounts on grid, charts and number lines. We also worked on comparing decimal numbers and identifying/creating equivalent decimals. Then, we worked on creating an outline for a biography presentation she will be creating on Marco Polo. We then used active reading skills and notes to cover and learn about his early life from a nonfiction text she brought to the session.

Today I helped the student with math homework dealing with rounding decimals and place values. He then worked on short story and reading comprehension questions. He also practiced his multiplication tables and helped me make flashcards for multiplication.

I assisted the student with math, vocabulary and spelling. He had a couple of misspellings, which I had him correct, and had a little trouble with his math, but was able to answer the questions correctly after I pointed out his mistakes to him.

We did several exercises from essay outlining to running a few drills to reviewing last week's homework. Overall, I think he is doing well but we need to practice his mechanics, grammar and syntax, and we need to focus on processing assignments so that he can do them through writing rather than verbalizing each question/thought. That's ok in class but for tests and homework it would be good if he developed more of a skillset to brainstorm through writing.

The student and I went over fractions again; this time she was able to show me all the steps of the problems and memorized how to do each type of problem. Her mother reports she has been working on it every night with her. We went over multiplying decimals, and I gave her a worksheet on this for homework. Next, we worked on brainstorming and writing a rough draft for her book report. She is to complete the rough draft for homework this week so we can review it next week.

After the school break, it was nice to work with this student again! He is preparing for his final in Geometry which will be the week of the 18th. We reviewed the first two chapters of his book, covering line segments, midpoint of a segment, skew lines, planes, collinear, coplanar, induction, angles, distance formula, complementary and supplementary angles, conditional statements, converse of statements, bi-conditional statements, etc. It had been months since he had done these concepts, but he did well! We will continue to review the remaining chapters during our next session in preparation for the final. He has been doing note cards to help him remember formulas, etc. This is a great executive functioning skill!
