STAAR EOC Tutoring FAQ
Are you taking STAAR End of Course (EOC) tests in high school? These tests can be stressful, as they play a large role in determining your graduation date, and can help evaluate whether you are on track for college courses. One-on-one STAAR EOC tutoring can make a huge difference in your preparations for these intensive exams, particularly if you are having trouble structuring your review to cover the appropriate material and strategies for the STAAR format. Varsity Tutors can help you get connected with a private STAAR EOC tutor in your area.
An experienced tutor can evaluate your ability in each of the subjects tested, from English and math to science and social studies, and can create a learning plan dedicated to reviewing and strengthening the areas that trouble you most. If you struggle with English, a STAAR EOC tutor can help you review literary and informational prose, and can teach you strategies for approaching questions about everything from fiction and poetry to newspaper articles and persuasive writing. Oftentimes, questions on these exams will test your ability to make inferences from the text or understand complex vocabulary. A tutor can help you learn to decode the most complicated of passages and to use context clues to help define unfamiliar words that you may encounter.
With private tutoring, you can focus on the topics with which you struggle most while also receiving test-specific strategies for those topics you already understand. In many ways, STAAR EOC tests assess your comprehension of subject fundamentals and your ability to apply this knowledge, rather than whether you can simply recall the details of each subject. This is especially evident on the STAAR EOC Math tests, which test your understanding of algebra I and II and geometry. With a private tutor, you can review the fundamentals and pick up any stray applications you might have forgotten over the course of your class. The STAAR EOC Math tests challenge students with tricky questions that may be missing key information or have important hidden details. A talented tutor can walk you through difficult problems and teach you strategies to decode complex questions and avoid being tricked. You can often get closer to the right answer by drawing missing figures, estimating quantities, and looking to the answer choices for clues. Your tutor can expose you to the complex exam formats in advance, helping to reduce surprises on test day.
For many students, the Science STAAR EOC tests are the most difficult. These exams measure your knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physics. You may find that you are unable to work your way through science problems in the same way that you approach other, more stepwise coursework. A STAAR EOC tutor can help you review the necessary vocabulary with mnemonics or flash cards, and review concepts with which you struggle in each of these sciences. With a private tutor, you will be able to ask as many questions as you need to in order to make sure that you fully comprehend the subject at hand. A talented tutor can also help you prepare for the STAAR Social Studies examination by assessing your knowledge of history and geography, and reviewing the topics you specifically need to focus on in preparing for the test. No matter which assessments cause you apprehension, private tutoring can provide you with focused, one-on-one attention tailored to address the concepts that you most need to learn and review.
The Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person, whether in a coffee shop, library, or your own home, or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice. Contact the directors at Varsity Tutors today to learn more about getting connected with the STAAR EOC tutoring options near you, or to start reviewing with an experienced tutor!

Recent STAAR EOC Tutoring Session Notes
For today's session we went over a reading assignment that was given to her prior to our session. It covered plot structure and required her to pull other additional elements in order to answer the questions. We also went over another selection that covered indirect and direct characterization. At the conclusion of our session I went over her essay and short answer prompts for Monday. We discussed how to brainstorm, construct a thesis statement, and use supporting details. We also talked about using the essay prompt and background info provided to help make your essay better.
During this session, we worked on homework from her other tutoring. She had a question packet and two essays to finish and turn in the next day. She said she was having trouble understanding the concepts in the questions, but it turned out she was just overwhelmed. We went over the concepts - drawing conclusions, cause and effect, making inferences, etc. - and she was able to define them all with little prompting. We made notes on the pages so she could remember them for later and moved on to the essays. I helped her plan for both the expository and persuasive essays she was assigned. She had some vocabulary trouble with the prompts, but once she figured out what the prompt was asking, she planned both essays fairly well. I left her well prepared to write the essays later.
This was our first session. We discussed strategies that could help the student overcome her comprehension struggles. We also looked at how she approaches terms she doesn't know. We walked away with three goals
1. Test the term
2. Test the answer
3. Score of 2245
We covered the state assessment Writing section, emphasizing theme, tone, and perspective. She struggled most with perspective and comparison questions. She seemed more confident as the tutoring session progressed. I gave her three additional state assessment practice sections to work on for our next session.
The student and I went into an articulate discussion of quadratic functions and equation forms. We talked about what a parent quadratic function is and what it describes and is used for. We briefly reviewed slope-intercept form to assure she has mastery in this area, and she does. We discussed what a domain and range means and how it is represented in quadratic systems. The last 25 minutes of the session we did prep work for the biology assessment exam, the primary focus being cell anatomy. She needs to review cellular organelles and their functions for our next session. She is progressing well and seems to be building confidence.
The student and I worked together on a portion of a practice placement test. I gave her test taking strategies. She is a much better reader than I had anticipated. She is a hard worker who wants to face her challenges head on.
