We went over the Introduction to Behavioral Ecology (Natural Selection, Ecology, Behavior, Tinbergen's Four Why's, Optimal Clutch), Testing Hypotheses (Comparative Approach and Experimental Analysis), Economic Decisions (Kacelnik's Loading Curve Experiment, the Starling Study), Predators and Prey: Co-evolutionary Arms Races (Aposematism, Crypsis, Mullerian Mimicry vs. Batesian Mimicry), Competition for Resources (ESS, IFD). I also created a personalized list of definitions of ecology terms that she found very helpful and will review on her own. She needed more help understanding the concepts and defining some of the terms, such as Tinbergen's Four Why's, the difference between Mullerian and Batesian Mimicry, the reasons that the Comparative method was used, so that is what we focused on during this session as well as going over every chapter to make sure she understood everything easily. She found it very helpful and now has a better understanding of these chapters.

The student has her midterm exam coming up on Thursday morning. We spent the first half of the session reviewing homework problems about magnetic forces on moving charged particles. My help on these mostly consisted in showing the small, generally non-electromagnetic tricks necessary to solve a problem. Then, we looped back and reviewed homework problems that she had missed before we started meeting. She nearly got stumped by a problem that could be solved with differential equations, but is much easier solved with energy considerations. This was a teachable moment, since she saw that when one feels stuck one should attempt alternate paths to solving a problem. Most of the problems on which we focused emphasized concepts from first-semester physics, like the reasoning required for solving the dynamics of a system.
