Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Kate in Portage, IN
We started the session with a review of the vocabulary that the student memorized for today. I quizzed her on definitions and word use and she did very well. It was obvious that she had been studying. We then moved on to a lesson on root words and I gave her an assignment to complete for Thursday. We finished the session with some grammar questions and a reading comprehension passage that we will complete next session.

SSAT Tutoring review by Nick in Portage, IN
We ended up splitting this session in two over two days, so the first day I only worked with student 1. We went through some more math problems, including an intensive review of functions based on one of his homework assignments. We also looked at two of the most important strategies for the reading section - coming up with your own answer before looking at the choices and tying answers back to specific language in the passage. Student 2 and I then worked on these same strategies Thursday, while all three of us also looked more in detail and how to approach main idea questions vs. inference questions vs. specific detail questions. We also went back over the verbal section to see what we could learn about the analogies without stressing over vocabulary with such a short time to prepare.

SSAT Tutoring review by Pieta in Portage, IN
The student worked on his roots and vocab for homework but didn't do all of the practice homework so we worked on it in together. We began the session looking at the root words and vocabulary words that weren't sticking for him. We tried to come up with mnemonics for each. For synonyms today we covered if you know the word, come up with your own definitions before looking at answer choices AND if you've heard of the word, put it in context. Analogies: practiced homework problems Math: We reviewed some of the basic math concepts on the test but spent most of our time on percentages and percentage word problems. Reading: We reviewed the strategies and tried our hand at two reading passages with questions. He did very well. Homework: 1) Toots 11-20 2) Vocab, second column 3) Syn: drill 12, pp 230-231 4) Math: p. 68, #'s 7-9 AND p 79, 1-20 5) Reading: pp. 263-268

Today we again spent half the time on Math, half on English. We worked on word problems in math, and did a short review of percents, which she did very well on. She also practiced writing an essay today. We also practiced a few reading exercises. She did very well today in all aspects.

SSAT Tutoring review by Meghan in Portage, IN
We covered math, reading, and verbal. He did sample sections in math while being timed to give him an idea of how long he has to do each problem. Then we did practice passages and practice synonyms and analogies. His synonym use have improved a lot. He does very well with math when he applies himself.

SSAT Tutoring review by Will in Portage, IN
The student did well as we continued to practice analogies. I encouraged him to spend more time figuring out the relationship between the first two terms before jumping into the answer choices. Once he does this, he's able to figure out the answer. This process is the hardest aspect of analogies, so he's in good shape. Moving forward, vocabulary will be another area of focus.
