Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Clarisa in Portage, IN
FIRST MEETING: 1) I did a language assessment and had a discussion of what the student would like to achieve in his Spanish lessons. He is now taking Spanish one in high school. 2) He would like to be able to understand more in his class and improve his test scores. He is struggling with all verb conjugations, accents, and grammar. He wants to improve on his writing skills, vocabulary recall, and comprehension. He feels his comprehension is OK, but needs more help in writing sentences. 3) The student has a "D"ù right now in Spanish. He just took a test yesterday but doesn't know what grade he got. 4) In his class, they are learning the verbs "saber"ù & "conocer"ù. I gave a detailed explanation of the difference in both of these verbs and when to use them. We did examples in his book with these two verbs. I also gave him tips of specific prepositions that are used with each verb. He got it! 5) We went over more verbs: "jugar / hacer / oir"ù (what I call "go-go"ù verbs). He used these in many sentences with several pronouns and correctly completed the examples. 6) I explained "pronoun substitution"ù to him because he was confused of which pronoun goes to a proper noun / name. 7) We covered comparative phrases ("mas / menos... que / tan....como) then did an activity from the book. 8) I asked him to read a story in his book about famous baseball players in Latin America. He just had minor pronunciation mistakes. He understood the whole story. The student is a lively, enthusiastic learner! I can tell he is interested in Spanish, but just needs patient explanations and solid guidance to improve his grade. He wants his test scores to get better. He is willing to do the work and I know he will do just fine. He is a delightful young man! Homework: I told him to do flash cards for the "more / less.... than/ as.... like"ù phrases plus vocabulary he has trouble remembering. He needs to review everything we covered today.

Latin Tutoring review by Nicholas in Portage, IN
We spent the entire session studying vocabulary, which has been his weak point from the start. I definitely think that the concerted effort to focus on vocabulary helped, as he definitely seemed to be more confident with a lot of the words by the end of the session. I left him with more vocabulary to practice during the break, and I also referred him to a website that he can use for practice.

Latin Tutoring review by Victor in Portage, IN
The session was filled with grammar. Starting out with a review of the most common pronouns used in Spanish. Following a dedicated study of three different units of direct pronouns. The student showed understanding and moments of clarification. The next three units covered introduced indirect pronouns in which we saw the difference between direct and indirect pronouns and clear out the differences. Quizzes were done after each unit to check for understanding using online materials. The student was responsive and showed signs of progress. A lot of extra practice was left in order to establish and assess the next session. Good session.
