I'm a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Science-Computing--the University's equivalent of the pre-med major, but with additional credits reserved for a few Computer Science electives. While there, tutoring was one of the main activities I was involved in, and I found it deeply fulfilling when I'd see a certain idea suddenly click for my tutees.

I am a high school history teacher who has also worked as a teaching assistant at one of the country's top 10 colleges. I've taught ACT/SAT prep for about 4 years to students at all ends of the academic spectrum: from those working with learning disabilities/accommodations & struggling with timing to those trying to achieve perfect scores. Although I always create individualized plans, I focus on teaching every student the most effective, step-by-step way to approach each question on each section of the test. Beyond test prep, I've taught/tutored just about every academic subject through the undergraduate level. Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading about history, going to church, coaching sports (track & tennis), and spending time with my family. I really enjoy getting to know each student I teach as we work toward our goals.

I am currently a student at Dartmouth College studying Biology, with a concentration on Human Biology. I tutor many subjects, but specialize in standardized test prep and in science, particularly Biology at all levels. I am most passionate about science, it is my favorite subject because it always has a definite answer but it might not be what you expect. At Dartmouth, I am a member of the marching band, Emergency Medical Services, and the sustainability program.

I am a certified ESL teacher as well as teaching History at the local community college. Being an ESL teacher gives me the opportunity to bridge language and cultures, which is something I am passionate about. History is the perfect subject to encourage students to think critically and independently. History, whether it is personal/family or state or national or world, provides an identity and moral understanding. I find it exciting when students move beyond parroting what I say or what the readings say to draw their conclusions and back up their statements with facts. By examining the past, students learn so much more about the present, as well as develop the abilities to use logic, problem-solve, assess evidence and conflicting interpretations, and understand past examples of change. These abilities transition into working life skills as well as develop responsible public behavior no matter if they are a national or community leader, an informed voter, or an observer.

I enjoy helping students learn more about math. It is a great feeling to see the "light bulb" turn on. I have been a math teacher and tutor for over 10 years, which includes teaching secondary, collegiate, and graduate courses. I earned a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame. I also have an M.B.A. in quantitative business analysis from Indiana University and earned my secondary mathematics teaching license/certification at Indiana Wesleyan University.

I am currently a fourth year medical student in Indianapolis. I completed my undergraduate education at Indiana University Bloomington, where I majored in Biology and Spanish. I also completed two minors in Mathematics and Chemistry. While at IU, I worked for the Department of Mathematics and Department of Spanish. I also worked as a Peer Tutor for the IU Athletics Department, tutoring in several subjects including statistics, chemistry, physics, and Spanish. I graduated from college with a 4.0, and I entered medical school shortly thereafter. Since coming to medical school, I have excelled in all of my pre-clinical coursework, and I currently rank in the Top 20% of my class. I feel very comfortable and confident tutoring other students in a variety of subjects from math and science to Spanish. I like to think that the same techniques I have used to excel in all phases of my education can be easily adapted to other students and help you achieve your academic goals, just as I have!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Portage's 11 schools in both the Portage and Valparaiso school districts. Whether your student attends a elementary, middle, or high school in the area, we can match them with a tutor who understands local curriculum standards and can provide personalized support aligned with what they're learning in the classroom.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 18.3:1 in Portage schools, many students benefit from one-on-one attention that classroom instruction alone can't provide. Personalized tutoring fills that gap by giving your student dedicated focus on their specific learning needs, whether that's filling knowledge gaps, building confidence, or accelerating ahead—something that's harder to achieve in a larger classroom setting.

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who are familiar with Indiana's academic standards and how they're taught in Portage schools. They can help your student master Indiana-specific content, prepare for ILEARN assessments, and develop the skills needed to succeed in both current coursework and future academic transitions.

Your first session is a chance for the tutor and student to get to know each other and identify specific learning goals. The tutor will assess your student's current understanding, discuss any challenges they're facing in class, and create a personalized plan for how tutoring can best support their success—whether that's homework help, test prep, or building foundational skills.

Students in Portage seek tutoring across a wide range of subjects, with math and English being particularly common at all grade levels. We also connect students with tutors in science, social studies, foreign languages, and test prep for standardized assessments. If you're unsure whether tutoring would help in a specific subject, we can discuss your student's needs and find the right match.

We take time to understand your student's learning style, academic goals, and specific challenges before making a match. We connect you with tutors who have expertise in the subjects and grade levels your student needs, along with experience working in Indiana schools. This personalized approach helps ensure a strong fit from the start.

Varsity Tutors offers flexible scheduling to work around your family's needs—whether your student needs help once a week or multiple times weekly. We also offer various pricing options to fit different budgets. During your initial consultation, we can discuss what frequency and investment level makes sense for your student's goals.

You'll see progress in multiple ways: improved grades on assignments and tests, increased confidence in class participation, and better understanding of challenging concepts. Your tutor will keep you updated on your student's progress and adjust their approach as needed to ensure they're moving toward their academic goals.
