Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

SAT Math Tutoring review by Nora in Minneapolis, MN
In this session, the student and I continued our focus on the SAT Math sections, and particularly on those sections that contain both multiple choice and grid-in problems. We began by going over the practice Math section that she completed since our previous session; she had finished with a minute or so to spare, but expressed that there had been several multiple-choice question in particular that she hadn't known how to approach. We went through each of those questions one by one, and discussed how to analyze the question for what information it gave, what information it ultimately asked the student to find, and how best to use the former to find the latter. Particular skills that we reviewed over the course of our work included calculating the number or permutations when there were restrictions on the number of options for each position, recognizing geometric sequences, using the properties of right triangles to find missing elements of other two- and three-dimensional shapes that contain them, finding the union and intersection of two sets, and solving algebraic equations that involve one or more variables with fractional coefficients. She appeared confident after we worked through a few practice problems that mirrored the ones that had previously challenged her. She is very bright, and once prompted with even just a few questions designed to help her analyze challenging math questions, she was able to articulate not only the answers to those questions but also some ways in which answering those questions could help her find the answer to a difficult math question.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Sam in Minneapolis, MN
Today we covered coordinate geometry. We worked with points, lines, and circles. The student needed a lot of brushing up in these areas. I had to teach her the formulas for distance, midpoint, slope, and the equation of a circle. Once she remembered those formulas, however, she gained confidence and was able to begin doing the problems by herself. I told her it is very important to have these formulas memorized before her assessment. She remains very positive and receptive and easy to work with.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Joseph in Minneapolis, MN
The student is very intelligent and was able to recall math very quickly. I left him with a geometry formula sheet in order to better help recall and focus on the geometry questions. He understood math terms very well.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Harrison in Minneapolis, MN
The student and I covered SAT Math problems, namely solving and simplifying equations. He struggled with simplifying equations, creating equations based on word problems, and identifying the right variables to solve for. He was very receptive to learning the new material.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Nathan in Minneapolis, MN
The student and I did our first math session in about 10 days, and she is improving, but now we need to be able to get her to answer 3 or 4 more questions correctly every session. Next week, we'll be focusing more on problems involving adjacent and vertical angles, and their relationships.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Robert in Minneapolis, MN
We covered a review of SAT math this session. She had an SAT that she had taken, and we went over it. There were a number of problems on the math that she either omitted or missed that we had to go over. I showed her a number of strategies to help find the answer. The problems ranged from geometry to algebra to probability. There were also a number of grid-ins to correct. Picking number and back solving were two of the strategies I mentioned to her. Also, we briefly went over the essay - how to succeed at it and how to prepare for it. Great work!
