Reading Tutoring review by Morganne in Hawthorne, CA
I worked with the student on reading with expression (exclamation, questions, and stress). We also worked on finding describing words. I worked with the second student on starting to sound out words and finding rhymes.

Reading Tutoring review by Mehek Farah in Hawthorne, CA
Today, I had the student complete one 4th grade level state assessment released passage independently; I did this so I could monitor her strategy use and see how she does working on her own. When reading the passage, she used highlighters to highlight key words in the passage and in questions. She also wrote paragraph summaries. She completed the passage and questions in 40 minutes. She got 3 out of 8 questions incorrect. I walked her through the incorrect questions and she showed understanding as to why there was a better answer. I also advised her to write the reasons and evidence for her answers next to each question, which may lessen the amount of incorrect answers she is marking. I gave the second passage to her mother along with the correct answers and explanations for the answers so the student can work on the passage the day before the state assessment test, which is on the 23rd. The student's father said that her teacher has reported an increase in her grades since her tutoring has begun.

Reading Tutoring review by Roxanne in Hawthorne, CA
The student and I went over her history and geography homework by discussing elements of the American Civil War. We did some visual matching of major people from the textbook, and for this week she will want to go over her reading and make a flashcard for every major person described in her chapter reading. This will be one of many activities meant to model active reading skills. She and I also went over her language arts work for the week by going over antonyms and synonyms and adverbs. She should finish the end of the synonym and antonym worksheet before next session. We decided to change our reading assignment over to the first "Pretty Little Liars" (instead of the 8th book), which she has read the first chapter from, for next week. Student two and I did picture matching for some of his vocabulary words, and went over the others through flashcards. I always put in two to three flashcards on which the advanced words are misspelled so that the student will identify and remember them more readily. He identified both misspelled words for this week, and was able to put them into sentences that were connected to his class subject for the War of 1812. We also did a word find of some of his more advanced words, and I had him look for letter pairs from words to find them easier--which will help him remember letter pairs (like the vowels in treaty and peace). For homework he should finish his word-find worksheet. We also did a few tracing sheets of the words from his vocabulary, and he should finish those by filling in the last line with a sentence using his vocabulary word.

The student did very well today. He read the next two chapters of the Dragon Masters book, and he wrote two one paragraph summaries, one per chapter. To conclude the session, we reviewed his vocabulary words. He is demonstrating a nice amount of progress in his fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary word retention!

Reading Tutoring review by Marcelle in Hawthorne, CA
We went over our multi-sensory exercise and reviewed blending words and segmenting. The student is becoming more automatic with this, and when she reads from the book, she guesses less than before and now tries to decode the word by herself. We need to do these exercises until she reads fluently. We are working on rhythms and how reading is a rhythm. I gave her a word family ending in 'tion' to practice.

Reading Tutoring review by Madison in Hawthorne, CA
The student had a lot of homework today, but she got through all of it in about an hour. She had three math worksheets today (she usually has 1-2) as well as her spelling homework and several other grammar and spelling worksheets. She is being introduced to several new concepts both in math and English (for example, beginning division/ multiplication and greater/ less than and plural vs. singular words). She is getting much better at word problems.
