Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Mateusz in Hawthorne, CA
Today we covered rates of reactions and molarity. The student and I briefly covered this when we met last week, but we went further in detail today. He had a lab that tested what affects the rate of reactions and together we reviewed these properties as well as a PowerPoint that was gone over in class. We went slide for slide as I elaborated on concepts along the way. We finished the session by doing some molarity practice problems. Afterwards, I showed him another method of working through his chemistry problems. I recommended that he try and use the method to help organize his work, but only if he is comfortable and his teacher accepts it as a valid form of showing work. I recommended that he continue to do practice problems and go over his notes in depth. He showed a great understanding of material, and I am confident that he will do well on upcoming quizzes.

Physiology Tutoring review by Katherine in Hawthorne, CA
We covered topics in chemical kinetics. The student has a test tomorrow, and the teacher just announced that it was going to also have kinetics (an earlier topic), in addition to the electrochemistry that we have been covering. Key concepts were how to determine the order of the reaction with respect to each reagent, how to determine the rate equation, and how to solve for the rate constant. I also gave her a table of zero, first, and second order rate equations in comparison to their rate laws so that she can better learn the differences in the graphs that she might see.

We reviewed acids and bases for the student's quiz. We went over a lot of conceptual questions, and I think she did very well with the content.

Physiology Tutoring review by Jonathan in Hawthorne, CA
Today, we reviewed the gas laws and how they equate to the ideal gas law. We reviewed Boyle's law, Charles' law, Avogadro's law, the combined gas law, and finally the ideal gas law. We discussed the assumptions of each and how the other laws add up to give the ideal gas law. We then went over a few of his homework questions with me guiding initially and then allowing him to do the last 2 questions unassisted. I then gave another practice question to test his knowledge, and he was able to complete the question with no help from me. His only issues were with significant figures, and with that, I explained why they were important and how to determine the correct number. I reviewed the rules of significant figures briefly and gave an example of how they are derived.

The student and I reviewed material that she was recently quizzed on and will soon be tested on. She has been doing well with this material for as long as we've been covering it. She did well on the quiz, and we simply worked on some of the more complex problems possible and refined her skills. She was even more confident than before by the end of the session.

Physiology Tutoring review by Aaron in Hawthorne, CA
Since we introduced equilibrium reactions in our last session, we went back and learned the quantitative methods for these systems. The student had already done some work in these sections, so he was already off to a good start. The only difficulty involved common-ion effect calculations. We will review these later this week. He already understands the process, but we will solidify the idea behind simplifying assumptions and orders of magnitude.
