Tonight we did a quick final review of all the material that will be covered on the student's exam. She seems to be gaining a better understanding of the material, and she does well on the tests.

Biology Tutoring review by Alexandra in Hawthorne, CA
The student and I reviewed the blood flow within the heart and the different structures. She remembered most of these structures and the direction of the flow, and at the end could correctly specify to which structure the blood would flow from any point within the diagram. We also reviewed the different names of the valves and little tricks to remember which was which. Her proficiency in structures and the flow helped as we progressed onto studying how the heart contracts to expel blood to the lungs and body and how it relaxes to fill. At first, she had difficulty with how the pressure changes occurred, but we came up with a way to demonstrate the idea with a plastic water bottle (the bottle, or heart, could be squeezed to expel water, or blood, and relax to fill) in combination with the valves. We briefly discussed the intersection of these larger functions with the cellular structures and the link of the autorhythmic cells with the contractile/muscle cells, and we will cover the physiology of contraction more next session.

The student has an exam on Monday, so we went over genetics and evolution. He had a fine sense of the principle of Darwinian concepts. It was a pleasure working with him. I have high expectations of his performance.

Biology Tutoring review by Akshaya in Hawthorne, CA
Today, the student and I did many practice problems for her test tomorrow. She performed very well with only a few mistakes. She didn't have any major concerns before her test, just small details that she was forgetting. She had a good attitude.

Biology Tutoring review by Kacey in Hawthorne, CA
During our session today, we began by reviewing Spanish. I had the student conjugate the verbs Ser, Estar, and Ir in the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses. She did really well, and only mixed up two of the tenses. Next I helped her review the uses of the verbs Ser and Estar, which both mean "To be." After reviewing their uses I had her take a little quiz over that material, which she did really well on. She only missed a few that were somewhat ambiguous, and I gave her a few tips on how to figure out how to answer those tough ones. Next we moved our attention to Biology where we started by reviewing chapter 15 and then beginning to cover chapter 16. She said that this material is definitely difficult for her, but that all of the practice and review she has done is definitely helping. Overall, it was a good session and it was very productive. I was very pleased with her focus and participation.
