Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Kurtis in Hawthorne, CA
The student is preparing for an upcoming AP Spanish lab in which he would be recording his voice and listening critically to his reply. As preparation, he had an outline of the format and two example questions, of which he needed to choose one to be prepared to answer. The subject of the lab revolved around finding an article in Spanish online to read as part of his prep work. Each student in the class was assigned a different Spanish-speaking country to search via Google relating to the family, then to compare similarities or differences in the familial structure of his home community vs that as described or discussed in the online article. He found an article online about his selected country, Mexico, which discussed the strength of family through the lens of good times and bad times. That, in Mexico, family is a source of strength when challenges arise. He then used his reading and understanding to practice his oral reply to the selection question in preparation of his upcoming AP Spanish lab.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by María Paz in Hawthorne, CA
In this Spanish tutoring session we went over the vocabulary words he learned the week before and his homework. We worked on the "to be" verb - we need to work on this verb a little bit more. He has grasped the concept of its use, and it is important to exercise this knowledge.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Arame in Hawthorne, CA
We did a first day assessment to determine the student's Spanish level and fluency. He can speak, read and comprehend Spanish. For the rest of the classes we will use audio and develop a better comprehension when speaking with natives. We also practiced reading and the most common uses of grammar.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Lauren in Hawthorne, CA
We covered time telling, created vegetable and fruit note cards, labeled parts of the home on drawings, introduced days of the week and months of the year via children's Spanish songs, and practiced common phrases note cards. The student did not struggle with any of the topics. She responds well to the first introduction of the words and phrases. She will benefit from continued practice of vocab, days of the week, months of the year, etc. through repetition. I left the student with note cards that we created today and the drawing with items around the home that the student drew and labeled with me. The student is doing well. I am planning to incorporate more active learning games for next week, as I've noticed the student (like any 5 year old!) enjoys moving around a bit within the hour and getting away from tabletop/repetition for a bit. I also think she enjoyed the children's song, so I will use more of them!

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Dylan in Hawthorne, CA
Today the student and I did question and answer work in writing. We used theatre-related vocabulary and began to implement the conditional/ imperfect/ past tenses of the subjunctive, which we will have a separate lesson for next time. We also returned to the mechanics of "gustar" in conversation.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Isabelle in Hawthorne, CA
I have asked the student to keep practicing Spanish pronunciation with an online resource. The student can memorize the vocabulary using a combination of these different techniques: read and repeat the words out loud, write them on flashcards, and use a theme. If the student memorizes at least 5 words a day, he will know 35 new words by the end of the week. Doodling like we did this morning can also help trigger his memory. Drawing a symbol or something simple next to the word will help. The student should continue working on the conjugation of the verbs ser and estar. I left the student with links to two websites that have lots of resources.
