Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Neel in Hawthorne, CA
First half of the session was spent finishing up essay prep. The student completed 2 timed essays and showed large improvements from the first to the second. The second half of the session was dedicated to writing multiple choice. While she did not perform as well here as she did last time, this is mostly attributed to the fact that the section she attempted this time was much harder than the one she scored nearly perfectly on last session. Still, I am pleased with the progress she has made. The next session will focus exclusively on the writing multiple choice.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Sonya in Hawthorne, CA
Today, we graded their math. They did, as usual, very well. At this point, we've reviewed just about everything there is to review in terms of the multiple choice content, so we spent most of the session brainstorming essays. Both had questions about the purpose of introductions and conclusions. In addition, student 1 seemed a bit nervous that she might have trouble generating ideas during the test. We peer reviewed their essays. Then, we brainstormed ideas for essay topics until they felt comfortable getting material quickly.

The student worked through a variety of grammar and editing exercises based off of problem questions from her previous SAT Writing practice test. We discussed the problems and reviewed related rules and reasons for correction. We also continued her vocabulary and reading assignment to build strength for the Critical Reading section.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Ian in Hawthorne, CA
Spent this session on a comprehensive survey of the SAT writing skills objective section. Organized concept review by the progressively longer components of the test (Identifying Sentence Errors, Improving Sentences, Improving Paragraphs), analyzing the most common grammatical errors in context. No issues in understanding; the student's writing background is clearly helpful in understanding the purpose of different parts of speech. Completed exercises and sample multiple-choice passages for Improving Sentence Error and Improving Sentence questions. Planned to continue there on Monday 7/21.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Hawthorne, CA
Today the student and I continued to review question types in the writing section. I think this is her weakest section, and that she struggles with error identification the most. I emphasized looking for verb and pronoun first because most problems will be with verb or pronoun and noun disagreement.
