Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Jessica in Lehi, UT
The student and I worked together on getting him prepped for his genetics quiz. In our previous session, we had completed a worksheet on this topic, so we went back over it again, and I quizzed him using some of the questions from the review and making up some new ones. There were a few things that he didn't remember from the week before, so we practiced those extra, and by the end of the session, he was performing quite well on those topics. Next session, we will be doing a comprehensive review for his final exam.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Kim in Lehi, UT
The student asked that we go over the greenhouse effect and how clouds affect insolation to prepare for her test on Wednesday. She had some worksheets that she was very skillfully able to screenshot onto the whiteboard so I could read along. We talked about what a greenhouse was and how it worked to stay warm in the winter. I was able to use her diagram as well as images from the internet to compare the greenhouse with the conditions forming in our atmosphere. The worksheet also asked what factors contribute to the greenhouse effect and what problems it causes. The next section dealt with how light interacts with matter (transmission, absorption, reflection, refraction, radiation). We discussed each section of the worksheet and the examples that were provided.

The student began with her French homework. She understood the basic vocabulary and sentence structure of the activity very well, and just needed aid on translating some of the titles of Canadian holidays. Next, she went on to outline her biology chapter. She is really getting ahead! I checked in with her from time to time, but she did not really need help with this. She worked on this until the end of the session.

The student came prepared with a list of questions. We defined ionic bonds, lattice energy, discussed what influences lattice energy, defined the octet rule, bond length and energy, discussed bond length factors, exothermic nature of bonds, electronegative trends, defined covalent bonds, and coordinate bonds. We'll continue working through the material this way, as this level is mostly about understanding the basic definitions of the chemical vocabulary. Nice work.

The student completed a photosynthesis lab on the school site. We discussed the light-dependent and independent (Calvin cycle) reactions of photosynthesis. I assigned her four pages of reading and two critical thinking questions from the textbook.
