Electrophilic additions to benzene. Ortho and para directors, meta directors, and activating deactivating groups. We did a lot of sample reactions, and all the reaction mechanisms. Why EWG cause the electrophile to add to the meta position (we drew out the resonance forms), electron withdrawing and electron donating groups. Halogenating the benzene ring (X2, FX3), and sample problems, friedelin craft acylation and alkylation mechanisms, nitration and sulfonation mechanisms. Effects of constituents and how to figure out where the electrophile adds when you have multiple constituents.

It was very nice to meet with the student again on Tuesday. It seems he has a good grasp on the reactions that he has been seeing so far. Many of the reactions that he has seen involve carbocations in their mechanisms. This is an important thing to notice as these reactions will obey Markovnikov's Rule. These reactions are also not stereospecific. The HX addition, H2O addition/H2SO4 reaction and the alcohol to alkene additions are of this type. The student may also soon learn about methyl and hydride shifts. Any carbocations formed have major implications for these types of reactions. I think he's doing very well with these reactions so far. He just needs to be sure to go over the mechanisms we reviewed, as these will come into play later in OChem. I enjoyed working with him today!

She and I met to discuss nucleophilic substitution reactions. We discussed the factors that go into an SN2 reaction and decided to save the SN1 explanation for another day (next Monday). We also went over a physics homework that she has due soon. We discussed momentum and collisions and did some homework problems illustrating these concepts.
