Learning a new language is never easy as it presents you with a new set of challenges that you may not be able to overcome in a normal classroom setting. It is important to have the opportunity to practice on a regular basis in order to learn a language effectively. A Los Angeles Latin course can provide you the opportunity to practice Latin with the guidance of an expert Latin instructor.
Latin was first encountered in ancient times as the language of Latium, the region of central Italy in which Rome is located. It is the precursor to the Romance languages of Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian. After the ancient Romans began to develop literature, a division formed in the language. The split became considerable by the beginning of the Roman Empire. There were two types of Latin spoken: Classical and Vulgar. Classical Latin was greatly influenced in vocabulary, grammar, and style by the Greek. Vulgar Latin is the form that modern Romance languages descended from.
Although Latin is considered a "dead" language, it is still a popular language to study. You may choose to study Latin because Latin is commonly used in the legal profession, scientific research, medicine, theology, and many other fields. Knowing Latin can also be helpful when trying to learn other languages, such as Romance Languages. Also, the Roman alphabet is still very much in use today. It is the alphabet used for English and many other languages around the world.
Whether you're a student struggling in your freshman Latin class at Downtown Magnets High School, a student at the University of California - Los Angeles who is needing help with an advanced level Latin class, or a professional looking to further your career, Varsity Tutors can enroll you in a Los Angeles Latin class that is right for you.
What Concepts Can a Los Angeles Latin Course Cover?
There are many concepts that you will need to learn in order to master Latin, and these classes can help you try to learn all of them. Most students find that they master the principles of pronouncing Latin easily enough, though it can take a little patience and practice. Luckily, unlike with modern languages, there is no pressure to develop an authentic Latin accent since it is a dead language. However, being able to pronounce Latin consistently may ultimately allow you to absorb Latin vocabulary more quickly, read more fluently, and appreciate the rhythms and sounds of Latin poetry and prose.
Many English words originate from Latin, making it relatively easy for English speakers to absorb. Some Latin words are almost identical to their English equivalents. For example, "finis" in Latin means "finish" in English.
In Latin, the endings of words (the inflections) are vital to understanding how words relate to each other and enable us to work out the meaning of a sentence. This can prove challenging for native English speakers because English uses inflected forms in a fairly limited way. In English, we have, on the whole, exchanged the inflections for a very strict system of word order. As an example, "Those girls are chasing the chickens" means one thing and "The chickens are chasing those girls" means something totally different. We can tell who is doing what to whom from the word order, which is much less true of Latin. That's why it is important for Latin language learners to look more carefully at the end of words rather than the beginning. Only then can the meaning of a sentence become clear.
Some other topics that may be covered when learning Latin are common phrases, essential vocabulary, reading, grammar and sentence structure, and Latin history. When you enroll in a Los Angeles Latin class, you can review all of the concepts of Latin as you try to improve your understanding.
