Whether you are a University of Central Florida student fulfilling your language requirements, an experienced Latin speaker looking to refresh your skills, or even a student at Lake Highland Preparatory School, Varsity Tutors offers an Orlando Latin course that can have a positive impact on your language learning experience. Language learning can be quite difficult, even if you do already have some background in Latin, and a traditional classroom curriculum might not totally encompass the difficulties of learning the language. One of the most important factors in your success as a Latin learner is regular opportunities to practice the Latin language in both writing and conversation. An Orlando Latin course can provide you with access to not only this sort of language learning environment, but it will also provide you with the tutelage of an expert Latin teacher who can help immerse you in the language.
First encountered in ancient times as the language of Latium, the region of central Italy in which Rome is located, Latin is the precursor of Roman languages like Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian. After the ancient Romans began to develop literature, a division formed in the language that became considerable by the beginning of the Roman Empire. Classical Latin, distinguished by its formality and elegance, was greatly influenced in vocabulary, grammar, and style by Greek. Vulgar Latin, on the other hand, was the popular spoken for of the language and is what modern Romance languages descended from. It was carried by the soldiers and colonists of Rome throughout the Roman empire. Now, the importance of learning Latin is even more prominent for English speakers, as English has proven to be the most receptive among the Germanic languages to be influenced by Latin.
It doesn't matter whether you're are a college student at who is struggling to learn Spanish and is worried about completing their general education requirements, a student at Timber Creek High School looking to enhance your Latin learning experience, a professional seeking to expand their business skill set, or just someone who is looking for more access to Latin literature, history, and culture from around the world, we can get you enrolled in a class that is right for you. You will be welcome at any level of proficiency. An Orlando Latin course just might be the thing you need to get more practice time with the Latin language into your schedule.
What material will an Orlando Latin class cover?
Latin classes cover a variety of key concepts that are essential for aspiring Latin speakers to understand. While most students find that they master the principles of pronouncing Latin easily enough, it can take a little patience and practice. Unlike with modern languages, there is no pressure to develop an authentic Latin accent since it is considered to be a "dead" language. Being able to pronounce Latin consistently will inevitably allow you to absorb the Latin vocabulary more quickly, read more fluently, and appreciate the rhythms and sounds of Latin poetry and prose. Many English words also originate from Latin, making Latin's vocabulary relatively easy for English speakers to absorb. Some Latin words are even almost identical to their English equivalents.
As for inflection, the endings of words in Latin are vital to understanding how words relate to each other and enable us to work out the meaning of a sentence. This can prove challenging for native English speakers because English uses inflected forms in a somewhat limited way. In English, we have, on the whole, exchanged the inflections for a very strict system of word order. We are able to tell who is doing what to whom based on word order, but this is far less true for Latin. Latin language learners need to look more closely at the end of words than the beginning. Only then can the meaning of a sentence fully become clear. Latin nouns also differ from English ones in that they are classified by gender: masculine, feminine, or neuter. Some masculine nouns identify people or animals that you might intuitively classify as masculine, while some feminine nouns identify people or animals that you might classify as feminine. There is also a third gender called neuter. Other areas of study in Latin classes include adjectives, verbs, common phrases, Latin history, and more.
