What can Atlanta ISEE prep cover?
The ISEE is a comprehensive exam that covers a broad range of skills and concepts. There are several different versions of the ISEE depending on the grade-level of the student who is taking the test. These versions are Primary 2, Primary 3, Primary 4, Lower, Middle, and Upper Levels of the ISEE. There's a lot to go over, so let's just dive right on into it.
The Primary versions are designed for students entering the second, third, or fourth grades. All three of these cover sections in Reading, Math, and Writing. The Primary 2 test includes a fourth Auditory Comprehension section, which presents auditory readings of fiction and nonfiction passages. Your student will listen to the passages and respond to questions about them. The Reading section assesses your student for grade-appropriate vocabulary and reading comprehension while the Math section covers basic math operations. Lastly, the Writing Sample offers a picture prompt for your student to respond to.
The Lower, Upper, and Middle versions of the ISEE are similar in format, timing, and sections. However, the concepts become more advanced between the Lower and Upper ISEEs. In all, there are five sections: Essay, Math Achievement, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. For all levels, the Essay section presents a prompt with a topic of interest. It allows schools to get a glimpse of your student's personality, creativity, and writing ability.
If your student is taking the Lower Level ISEE, they will need to demonstrate a variety of skills across these sections. The Quantitative Reasoning portion covers concepts like basic math operations, simple event probability, and geometric characteristics. The Verbal Reasoning section measures your student's vocabulary while the Reading Comprehension aims to assess their ability to use information from a passage. The Math Achievement portion revolves around concepts like 3- and 2-dimensional figures, simple operations, and patterns.
The Middle Level Quantitative Reasoning questions focus on more advanced abilities, such as problem-solving with integers and decimals, square roots, and distributive property. Math Achievement assesses your student's ability to solve problems that incorporate fractions, Venn Diagrams, multiples, and prime numbers. Your student will need to be able to infer information on the Reading Comprehension section. This portion incorporates figurative, literal, and explicitly stated language use. The Verbal Reasoning section measures middle and high school-level vocabulary, as well as your student's grasp of Latin, Anglo-Saxon, and Greek roots.
Students taking the Upper Level ISEE will need to showcase strong skills throughout the test. The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your student's ability to work with different shapes, inferring from data sets, and solving equations with exponents. The Verbal Reasoning section covers high school-level vocabulary, synonyms, Greek and Latin roots, and context clues. Reading Comprehension, on the other hand, requires you to be able to compare and contrast information, understand subtle information, and identify relationships between literary genres. Finally, the Math Achievement section assesses your student's ability to solve equations and word problems, as well as work with quadrilaterals, triangles, and variables.
Can my student benefit from a different approach to their Atlanta ISEE prep?
Thorough test preparation can make a difference in your student's performance on the ISEE. Varsity Tutors can set your student up with either or both test prep options: an Atlanta ISEE prep course or a private instructor. Some students prefer one over the other while others enjoy a combination of the two. Read on to learn more about these opportunities.
Private learning under expert instruction can give your student unique learning experiences. An Atlanta ISEE tutor can take the time to assess your student's learning personality, strengths, interests, testing goals, and other important factors to develop a custom-tailored study plan. A personalized review plan can allow your student to focus more on the areas of the test in which they have the most challenges, rather than painstakingly reviewing everything on the exam. A private tutor can introduce your student to a variety of study strategies, test-taking techniques, and other valuable lifelong skills. As the sole student, the instructor can regularly assess your student's progress to ensure that they are on the right track. Throughout each study session, your student can work through different learning materials and activities chosen to keep them engaged and motivated as they review for this exam.
On the other hand, some students prefer to learn in a structured group environment. We can enroll your student in an Atlanta ISEE prep class. With new classes in multiple sections starting every week, your student can join a group of their peers to work under the guidance of a skilled mentor. The class instructor can lead their students in discussions about the different ways one can approach the exam, as well as incorporate group activities to give your student time to practice the skills they need for this exam. Classes follow a set curriculum that focuses on skills, strategies, and concepts that the exam your student is getting ready to take will cover. Classroom learning can allow your student to gain a deeper understanding of the material by giving them the chance to discuss the information with their peers.
Whether your student would benefit more from working with a private instructor or a prep course, all instructors are thoroughly vetted to ensure that the instructor has the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to support students as they work to build their testing skills.
