St. Paul Intermediate Algebra Tutoring FAQ
Intermediate algebra is one of the most important math courses of a college-bound student's academic career. It is fundamental if you are looking to pursue a degree program in science. Chemistry and physics utilize intermediate algebra regularly, and the foundations of algebra are required for more advanced science courses as well. Furthermore, even if you are looking to pursue a degree in the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, or economics, you must, at the very least, understand intermediate algebra and be able to apply those skills to data. Quadratic functions, rates of change, systems of equations, and graphing are all essential skills for college-level study.
Despite its importance, intermediate algebra can seem like a nightmare. Many students have difficulty with elementary algebra, and these difficulties carry over into intermediate algebra. If you are struggling in intermediate algebra, there is no reason to feel alone. Issues with finding the value of x, graphing lines, and solving equations only intensify in intermediate and advanced coursework. Thus, you may feel completely lost from day one. And even if you are confident in your algebra abilities, complex new concepts can still leave you confused. Conic sections, rational equations, and logarithms are three specific areas that tend to leave many intermediate algebra students without confidence in their abilities.
If you are struggling with intermediate algebra, or never fully mastered elementary algebra, Varsity Tutors can help by connecting you with an intermediate algebra tutor anywhere in the country. When you first call, you'll be put in touch with our educational directors, who can build a precise student profile that can tell a tutor what you need and how you need it, including your learning style, schedule, course syllabus, and more. When your potential tutor contacts you, they will work with you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, which will help to form your custom-tailored study guide. Your tutor uses this flexible guide to keep you on track for success while ensuring that you are progressing at your natural pace, rather than feeling rushed.
Tutors have strong backgrounds in math and teaching, and they know how to work with students who have a variety of different learning styles. They realize that the one-size-fits-all approach used in a classroom setting is not the best for every student. Intermediate algebra tutoring programs can be fully customized to meet your unique learning needs. You can work with your tutor to craft a learning plan that focuses on areas that you are having trouble with, and move forward when there are concepts that you have already mastered. Unlike a classroom environment, you control the speed at which the material is covered. You don't have to worry about falling behind in your class, disrupting it with questions, or anything else that may plague you in a traditional setting.
Intermediate algebra tutoring sessions can be held in your home or in another location that is convenient and comfortable for you, whether that is a library, bookstore, or coffee shop. You can also choose the times for your sessions, whether you prefer afternoons, evenings, or weekends. You can also have face-to-face online sessions through our live learning platform as well, so you can work with your tutor when it is most convenient for you, even if your schedule is full of other commitments. Individual tutoring is set up with you as the sole focus. If you need to meet more frequently during the week, you can! If you need to spend a tutoring session preparing for an approaching test or a project, you can do that, too. Don't go another day feeling lost with intermediate algebra concepts. Call Varsity Tutors today to get help connecting with an intermediate algebra tutor in your area.

Recent St. Paul Intermediate Algebra Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I continued to review concepts that jumped out at him as tricky or confusing. We walked straight through the chapter summaries and when he didn't recognize a topic I asked him to confirm with the teacher that they definitely hadn't covered it in class. We solidified his foundations just in time for the test.
Today we reviewed for her final. We covered coordinate geometry, including plotting points, reflections, translations, and dilations. We also discussed rational vs. irrational numbers, and scientific notation. She did well. We also discussed inequalities but will work on them again next time.
The student and I continued to work on probability and combinatorics. We finished one homework assignment that consisted mainly of the probability of the union and intersection of sample spaces. The student is starting to understand the concepts a little better each time. We used Venn Diagrams in an application and were able to complete a challenging question. She was able to explain the entire process to me by the end of the session.
Today the student went over solving inequalities. We worked extensively with writing up algebraic equations to represent word problem situations. The student also reviewed how to work with negative numbers in addition/subtraction and multiplication/division situations.
The student and I went over the review given by her teacher. For each topic, we re-capped the important points and key concepts. I then had her practice reapplying the ideas with my oversight, and asked her to do a few specific problems from each chapter.
The student and I looked through her math notebook from the most recent school year. Using Mandarin with a little bit of English, I asked her what was hardest and easiest for her in math. She mentioned that her main problem was understanding the English math terminology. We made flashcards using the +, -, x, and division symbols with associated English terms. We reviewed adding fractions (changing denominators), reducing fractions, comparing fractions, and mixed number addition.
