I'm a current PhD student in the history department at Georgetown University who is also an experienced instructor with Varsity Tutors. As a recipient of several degrees, the most recent being a BA in history from Hillsdale College and a MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from Stanford University, I have long sought to make teaching my profession. Meanwhile, as a volunteer grade school teacher and a tutor with this company, I have many years' experience helping students reach their full potential. I am capable of teaching students in many subjects, including reading, mathematics, test prep, Latin, and especially writing, history, and literature. In practice, I am comfortable adapting to different learning styles and specific student preferences. Outside of my academic and career endeavors, I enjoy cooking, reading, and listening to and making music.

I am an Ivy-league graduate (Princeton summa cum laude) and an editor for an academic publishing press. I have years of experience teaching and mentoring at the university level (University of Notre Dame), and I've also tutored students in chemistry, math, the arts, and humanities from elementary school through high school. I've worked and lived in over seven different countries with international colleagues and I'm very understanding of different cultural backgrounds. I fell in love with teaching years ago while serving as a librarian for children and teens, and I enjoy working with students to reach their full potential.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Rice University pursuing a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology on the pre-med track. One of my most memorable experiences in the medical field has been working as a research intern at Texas Children's Hospital and collaborating with genetic specialists to publish a research paper about a rare genetic disease. Medicine is truly one of my greatest passions, and biology has been one of my favorite subjects to tutor through the peer mentorship program at my high school. Through this program, I have also extensively tutored math (from middle school math all the way through IB Mathematics) and find myself drawn by the methodical nature of the subject. Many times, I find that students simply label math as "difficult" because the concepts are brand new and numbers seem like a foreign language. Relating math concepts to simpler everyday ones is one of the many strategies I use when tutoring math, and I have found a lot of success through it. Throughout high school, I have been very active in my school community as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, president of the Speech and Debate Team, and president and founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Club. Through these roles, I have mentored younger students in areas such as writing, research, and public speaking. Additionally, I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish), although my favorite one to teach is Spanish. Attending an international school has emphasized to me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance, and I believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to reinforce these ideals. In my spare time, you can find me engrossed in arts and crafts, running my Etsy store, or volunteering my local art museum's kids' crafts classes. I also love listening to music, creating music on my violin, and singing various genres.

From my experience teaching math to a range of students, from middle school through college, I know that it does not come easily to everyone. However, I firmly believe that everyone has the capability for mathematical reasoning. Everyone has their own strengths and challenges, and my job as a tutor begins with identifying these. I like to have students work through problems while I guide them and make suggestions, so that I can get a sense of what they understand and what they don't. Then we can build on their knowledge and break down the challenging parts of the problem into smaller, more manageable chunks. I hold a bachelor's degree from UChicago and a doctorate from MIT, both in mathematics. I am available to tutor Latin, physics, and all levels of math. Outside of academics, I am an avid tournament chess player, and I enjoy running and cycling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Personalized language tutoring develops all four essential skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Many students find that classroom instruction focuses heavily on grammar and reading, but lacks conversation practice. With 1-on-1 instruction, tutors create a safe environment for speaking practice, help you understand natural pronunciation and accent patterns, and provide immediate feedback on your language use. This balanced approach helps you build practical communication skills, not just test-taking ability.
Speaking fluently requires consistent practice with a responsive conversation partner—something most classroom settings can't provide. Tutors engage you in real dialogue, correct your mistakes in the moment, and gradually increase complexity as you build confidence. They also teach you how native speakers actually use the language, including idioms, natural speech patterns, and cultural context. This active practice is far more effective for fluency development than studying grammar rules alone, especially since fluency typically requires hundreds of hours of immersive practice.
Both matter, but they serve different purposes. Grammar rules provide the foundation and help you understand sentence structure, but natural usage is what makes you sound like a native speaker. Expert tutors teach you grammar as a tool for understanding, then show you how real speakers bend and apply those rules in conversation. This approach helps you move beyond textbook language to actually communicate in the way native speakers do, while still having a solid grammatical foundation for more formal writing or academic work.
Memorizing vocabulary lists rarely leads to retention—your brain needs to encounter words repeatedly in meaningful contexts. Effective tutors help you learn new vocabulary through conversation, reading materials you're interested in, and spaced repetition practice. They also help you understand word families, prefixes, and roots, which makes learning vocabulary more efficient. Research on learning shows that retrieving information from memory (like using a new word in conversation) strengthens retention far more than passive review.
Yes—pronunciation is one of the biggest advantages of 1-on-1 tutoring. Tutors model correct pronunciation, listen to you speak, and provide specific feedback on sounds you're struggling with. They can explain the mechanics of how to produce unfamiliar sounds and give you exercises to practice. Unlike large classes where pronunciation often gets overlooked, personalized instruction lets you work on your specific accent challenges until you develop clearer, more natural-sounding speech.
Tutors work with students at every level, from complete beginners learning their first words to advanced learners preparing for proficiency exams or pursuing professional fluency. Whether you're starting from scratch, struggling with a specific skill level, or trying to reach advanced proficiency, personalized instruction can be tailored to your current ability and goals. Tutors adjust the pace, difficulty, and focus based on where you are, making learning efficient regardless of where you're starting.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors for a wide range of languages, including Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, and many others. Whether you're learning a commonly taught language or something more specialized, tutors are available to match your specific language goals. Each tutoring experience is personalized to your language, your current level, and what you want to achieve—whether that's conversational ability, academic proficiency, or professional fluency.
