I believe strongly in the importance of a good education, and in the ability of students to achieve to the utmost of their potential which is often much greater than they think they can achieve! Through learning science, mathematics, foreign languages, technology, literature, history, and the arts, a person can broaden his or her horizons to discover new worlds they've never imagined. My desire is to help people take those steps of discovery and to help create lifelong learners.

I believe fully in the philosophy of lifelong learning, and I plan to be a lifelong learner. For ten years, I have enjoyed tutoring others in my areas of strength, not only to help with content mastery, but also to help others enjoy becoming lifelong learners themselves. I have just graduated with my Master's degree in viola performance from Carnegie Mellon University, having earned a Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University.I am a musician by training, but I enjoy seeking knowledge in all subjects, and sharing that knowledge with anybody who will listen. In particular, I love to tutor writing, because the tutoring process encompasses both the "strict" rules of written grammar and the "open-ended" rules of content organization. To learn to write, a student must learn to express ideas, and in this setting, tutors and students can truly get to know each other. The most effective learning comes after we make learning enjoyable. That takes effort from both the teacher and the student. The teacher should come to the table with a good method and the creativity to break from the method from time to time. The student should come with an open mind, a little bit of patience, and curiosity about at least one thing - even if it is not directly related to the lesson. Some of the best learning moments can start out as light conversations!

I have an associate in arts, which I received from Glendale Community College. I am currently finishing my bachelors in education at Arizona State University, and I plan on teaching middle school mathematics. I have interned in numerous classrooms and with various grade levels. I have worked with small groups of students as well as a whole class. I am familiar with the traditional ways of teaching subjects as well as common core standards, specifically in math. I tutor in Math, English, Reading, and Writing, although my favorite subject to tutor in is math, because I am going to be a math teacher. I enjoy helping students and my goal for math, is not to make students love math, but to be able to understand math, and all other subjects I tutor in as well. My teaching philosophy can be described as practicing math over and over until it becomes second nature. I also believe it is important to understand the process in math and not just remembering problems or getting answers. It is important to understand how and why you solve problems a certain way to fully understand mathematics, and that is why I believe in teaching reasoning and logic in math. My tutoring style can be described as one where I will constantly question and ask my students what they are doing. If they can answer in detail and explain their reasoning and logic in math, then that is how I know they fully understand the content they are learning. I will not just give the answers when a student is stuck, I will guide with questions, use background knowledge and relate new content to what students have already learned, because I will be looking to my students to be able to find the solution themselves. I feel this is the best approach when I tutor, because it will be more rewarding for the students when they figure out the problems with guidance from me. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy taking my husky puppy to the park, and hanging out with my family. I also play in a softball league with my sister and brothers on Sunday, and I enjoy catching up on some of my favorite Netflix shows in my down time.

I graduated from Lynn University in 2010 with a degree in Communications. I'm a patient, encouraging, positive tutor who specializes in liberal arts, English, and essays. I love helping people learn! I believe to be an effective tutor one must be a good listener and encourage a dialogue, both of which I practice in my tutoring sessions. Tutoring is about the ability to really address what the student needs. Outside of academia I enjoy fashion, movies, and the arts.

I recently graduated from Houghton College with a B.S. in Biochemistry. While in college I loved the challenging courses and taking more classes than required, and I achieved high As in all Science and Math coursework.I started tutoring in high school and continued tutoring all throughout college for as many courses as possible including Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Calculus, among others, for both high school and college students. It is incredibly satisfying to see students who were struggling finally succeed. I have a great track record of helping students succeed in the their classes, raising Cs to Bs and Bs to As and increasing MCAT scores as much as 8 points. Along with tutoring I teach MCAT review courses and love engaging students in the long and difficult process. I plan on attending medical school a I am excited and passionate about a career in medicine.Along with academics I love to read for fun and play soccer. I played varsity soccer for four years in high school, and intramural soccer in college. I also love other outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. I am a Giants fan so I like to watch football, mostly the Giants, and play card or board games with friends.

My life long passion has been teaching and influencing children. For 20 years I volunteered in community/church based organizations, teaching and helping the young. After raising my own children, I decided to go back to school and get a teaching degree. I graduated Trinity Christian College with an elementary education degree having endorsements in English, science, and social studies. I also earned an ESL certification. I love teaching online! I have 5 years of online experience teaching students from 5-15 years old one on one tutoring sessions. My desire is to make a personal connection with each student; then use that connection to build the groundwork for a successful student/teacher relationship. I customize each lesson to fit the student's personal needs and learning goals. I welcome adult English learners as well. I specialize in conversational & written English skills. I am a native of Chicago and love to talk about my city. Looking forward to meeting you!

Frequently Asked Questions

The PRAXIS Core Math exam covers three main content areas: Number and Quantity (including fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios), Algebra and Functions (linear equations, polynomials, and graphing), and Geometry and Measurement (shapes, area, volume, and spatial reasoning). Test-takers also encounter data interpretation and basic probability questions. Personalized tutoring helps you identify which of these areas need the most attention and develop targeted strategies for each content domain.

Strong problem-solving on the PRAXIS Core Math exam requires more than procedural fluency—it demands understanding the underlying concepts and recognizing patterns across different problem types. Expert tutors help you move beyond memorized steps by teaching you to break down complex problems into manageable parts, identify what the question is really asking, and connect new problems to familiar concepts. Learning to sketch diagrams, work through examples systematically, and check your reasoning at each step builds both accuracy and confidence on test day.

Word problems require you to translate everyday language into mathematical notation—a skill that's separate from computational ability. Many test-takers struggle not with the math itself, but with identifying which information is relevant and determining which operation to use. Personalized instruction helps you develop a systematic approach: reading carefully for key details, defining variables clearly, and connecting the problem context to the underlying mathematical structure. With practice and guidance, you'll see how word problems actually reinforce your conceptual understanding rather than just testing computational skills.

Preparation time varies based on your starting point and comfort with math concepts, but most test-takers benefit from 4-8 weeks of focused study. If you're working to strengthen foundational skills or rebuild confidence after time away from math, you may want to allow additional time. Personalized tutoring accelerates progress by targeting your specific weak areas rather than having you review material you've already mastered. Your tutor can help you create a realistic timeline and track your improvement through practice tests that mirror the actual exam format.

You might understand a concept in isolation but freeze when you encounter it in an unfamiliar context or multi-step problem—this is one of the biggest hurdles on the PRAXIS Core Math exam. Expert tutors bridge this gap by teaching you to recognize patterns, see how concepts connect, and practice applying skills in varied scenarios. They help you move from "I can solve this type of problem" to "I can recognize when to use this tool." Through repeated, guided practice with different problem variations, you develop the flexibility and automaticity you need to perform confidently under test conditions.

Math anxiety often stems from past negative experiences, pressure to work quickly, or fear of making mistakes. Expert tutors create a judgment-free environment where you can ask questions, take your time understanding concepts, and learn that mistakes are valuable learning opportunities. By celebrating progress, breaking challenging material into manageable steps, and building genuine confidence through success, personalized tutoring helps shift your relationship with math from stressful to empowering. Many test-takers find that one-on-one instruction reduces anxiety significantly because you're working at your own pace with someone invested in your growth.

The best PRAXIS Core Math tutors combine deep subject knowledge with the ability to explain concepts in multiple ways—because what works for one learner might not work for another. They ask diagnostic questions to understand your thinking, listen carefully to where you get stuck, and guide you toward conceptual clarity rather than just showing you steps to memorize. Look for someone who can make abstract concepts tangible through examples and diagrams, help you develop problem-solving strategies beyond rote procedures, and create a learning environment where you feel comfortable asking questions. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in PRAXIS Core Math preparation and have a track record of helping students build both skills and confidence.
