Recent Waterloo IB Theory of Knowledge Tutoring Session Notes
The first exam in the student's psychology class in on Thursday, so we began reviewing the notes and texts from the course so far. Today we went over the material from the beginning of the quarter, mostly concerning historical concepts of abnormal psychology, classification of mental disorders, and assessment of mental disorders. We began a comprehensive study sheet for the student to review and to add to on her own.
During today's session, we did a full review of concepts in psychology in anticipation of the student's upcoming test. We were able to cover a number of topics. First, we discussed eating disorders--anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and eating disorders not otherwise specified, amongst others. Next, we moved to personality disorders. In addition to discussing the myriad variations that occur amongst personality disorders, we also looked at the overall organization of personality disorders by clusters. Moreover, we looked at the new treatment of personality disorders. Finally, we looked at disorders of development. Overall, the session was highly productive.
Today the student and I had a long session. We were preparing for her final in Psychology by going over all of the PowerPoints from class and picking out the key information for her to know for the exam. We will meet at least once more to go over the exam essay question and review one last time.
Today we worked on the student's paper for personality psychology. We worked on the content as well as the structure of the paper. Throughout the session I saw improvement in his ability to tie the theory as well as examples together. He is going to review his paper later and send me revisions and corrections. From there we will determine if another tutoring session is necessary.
I read and discussed with the student a human rights related news story for this week about African immigrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Italy. He wrote about six bullet points of annotations. Then we continued discussing the reading questions and I reminded him to keep up with the reading and take notes as he goes.
The student and I reviewed his syllabus, went over the discussion board posts from his professor to make sure he is caught up on all of the content, and worked through the second half of Chapter 3 and the beginning of Chapter 4 in his textbook. We also looked at the requirements for his first paper to make a plan for how to best approach it.
