I'm a recent college graduate living in New York City. My entire professional career has been spent working with youth. I love working with kids of all ages. Their ability to soak up information and improve is inspiring, and their energy makes work not feel like work. I believe that all students are capable of academic success and that sometimes all it takes is a novel approach. This is why it is important to understand the unique learning style of each student. I'm looking forward to getting to work at Varsity Tutors and helping students reach their full potential.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Chicago, where I received Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature and Linguistics. I have been able to pursue my passion for languages and literature in my career as well as my studies. I have taught English as a second language, critical reading, grammar, and academic and professional writing to students of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels, including incoming university students, business professionals in South Korea, and fifth and sixth graders in south side Chicago. I am especially excited when I get to help students work on their writing skills, and the breakthroughs my students have had in learning to express their own unique voices and perspectives clearly and articulately are some of our favorite teaching moments.

I am taking some time off to work, but I plan to return to school in the next few years to obtain a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology. While in college, I volunteered with the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, an organization that brings Penn students into Philly's inner city to tutor low-income middle school students. I found the experience deeply rewarding and my time with WPTP nurtured an interest in working with children professionally. I tutor a wide variety of subjects including English, writing, history, SAT Reading/Writing, French and more! My favorite subject to teach is history. The subject is often viewed by students as boring and unnecessary (along the lines of, "why should I learn something that happened already?"); in my view, history is alive and full of useful lessons that can be applied at the personal, national and societal levels, and I enjoy teaching this point of view to students, helping them to see history as a living, deeply relevant subject matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many high school geography students struggle with synthesizing information across multiple scales—from local to global—and understanding how physical systems interact with human populations. Students often find it difficult to interpret maps, graphs, and geospatial data, or to connect abstract concepts like climate zones and plate tectonics to real-world examples. Additionally, the breadth of the subject can feel overwhelming, as geography touches on natural systems, cultural patterns, economic development, and environmental issues all at once. Personalized tutoring helps students break down these complex topics, build spatial reasoning skills, and develop a framework for organizing geographic knowledge that sticks.
In a classroom, geography teachers often move quickly through units to cover curriculum standards, which can leave students behind on foundational skills like map reading or understanding latitude and longitude. With personalized 1-on-1 instruction, tutors work at your pace and can spend extra time on concepts that don't click the first time. Tutors also adapt their teaching style to match how you learn best—whether that's through visual maps, case studies, Socratic questioning, or hands-on activities. This focused attention helps you build genuine understanding rather than just memorizing facts, which translates to better performance on tests and deeper engagement with the subject.
A strong geography tutor understands both the physical and human dimensions of the subject and can explain why geography matters—connecting textbook concepts to current events, environmental issues, and real-world applications. They should be skilled at teaching spatial thinking and data interpretation, and comfortable working with maps, GIS basics, and geographic information. Beyond subject expertise, look for someone who asks good questions to uncover gaps in your understanding, can explain complex systems clearly, and helps you build confidence in areas where you've struggled. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who combine deep geographic knowledge with proven teaching ability and experience working with high school students.
Geography assessments often require you to analyze maps, interpret data, explain cause-and-effect relationships, and construct arguments about human-environment interactions. Tutors work with you on the specific skills these assessments demand: reading and annotating maps, organizing information across scales, and writing clear explanations that connect evidence to geographic concepts. They also help you develop study strategies tailored to how you process geographic information, whether that's creating spatial mental models, using retrieval practice on key terms and examples, or working through past exam questions with feedback. With targeted practice and personalized guidance, most students see noticeable improvement in both understanding and test performance within a few weeks.
Yes—this is actually one of the core strengths of personalized tutoring. The geography curriculum asks you to understand how landforms, climate, and natural resources shape human settlement patterns, economies, and cultures, and conversely how human activity influences the physical environment. This requires seeing connections across many different systems and scales. A tutor can help you build mental frameworks for understanding these relationships, use case studies strategically to reinforce patterns, and practice applying concepts to unfamiliar regions or scenarios. This integrated approach deepens your understanding and prepares you to tackle essay questions and analysis tasks that expect you to think holistically about geographic challenges.
Core skills include spatial thinking (understanding location, scale, and spatial relationships), map literacy (reading various map types, understanding projections and symbols), data interpretation (analyzing graphs, charts, and geospatial information), and systems thinking (understanding how physical and human systems interact). You should also develop the ability to identify and explain geographic patterns—why certain regions have similar characteristics, how globalization connects distant places, and how environmental or political changes cascade across regions. Tutors help you practice these skills consistently and apply them across different geographic contexts, from regional studies to thematic units on climate change or development, so you build flexibility and confidence in your geographic reasoning.
Most high school geography courses follow similar frameworks that emphasize the Five Themes of Geography or the National Geography Standards, covering location and place, human-environment interaction, scale and region, and interconnections between places. However, the specific content, depth, and focus can vary—some courses emphasize world regional geography, others focus on human geography, and some integrate AP-level content. Understanding your particular curriculum and learning objectives is essential for targeted support. When you connect with a tutor through Varsity Tutors, they work with your course materials, your teacher's expectations, and your specific learning needs to make sure tutoring directly supports your success in your actual class, whether that's standard high school geography or honors/AP-level work.
