I hold an MA from University of Leicester in archeology and heritage studies, both a BS & MS from Western Oregon University in interdisciplinary studies (history & sciences) and secondary education in curriculum design, and a BA from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, CA in comparative religions. I have also taken classes in the University of London’s Centre for Development, Environment and Policy in sustainable development through the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). In addition I am an award-wining author in two categories, (Adult short topic and Children's Lit.). Subjects I have taught include history, Theory of Knowledge (IB), IB biology, earth sciences, IB environmental science, geography, religion, IB philosophy, literature, anthropology, archaeology, art, composition, literature, life skills, etc. I currently have two novels before a publisher as I am represented by Stonebridge Publishing for a forthcoming book this June.

I was born and raised in East Africa before subsequently returning Stateside for my first three degrees. Fifteen years of my professional life have been spent in the Middle East (Yemen, Israel/West Bank, Gaza, Jordan) including teaching at international schools, colleges, research institutes, practicing archeology and working on sustainability projects. Along with my varied education and degrees, I bring genuine, holistic life-experiences and diverse global perspectives to each field wherein I teach.

My honors include two teacher of the year awards from different institutions, in addition to an award for “Renaissance Man.” I have just returned Stateside after a year and a half as faculty and researcher at Aksum University, Ethiopia where I was the Master's coordinator developing the Master's curriculum in Archaeology. Previous to my research in Ethiopia, I worked extensively in the Middle East, the Pacific Islands and Asia in research and teaching capacities, including as the Institutional Researcher - University of Guam. In my travels I have visited over eighty countries.

While in Aksum, increasingly I was called upon to present to dignitaries and visiting diplomats. My guests include: UNESCO Chiefs, Ethiopian Fed. Ministers, US Senators, Melinda Gates, former US President G. W. Bush, Ambassadors, CEO’s, television crews, and visiting scholars. PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION –

Having been born and raised in Africa, I learned from an early age the value of sustainability, inclusive justice, and education as integral components for building and maintaining the social and cultural fabric of communities. My diverse degrees and broad life experiences inform my world view and personal philosophy, and have enriched the way I interact with and communicate with people from multi-ethnic backgrounds and across religious and non-religious backgrounds.

As an educator, it is my goal to equip students to grasp the complexity of systems-based models for learning, and utilize higher order thinking skills across the disciplines, in order to cultivate more aware, responsible, and engaged citizens, willing and better able to address the many challenges and opportunities they will face in life. Consistently, I am told by both parents and students that I have been their best and most impactful teacher. I am a student of my students, looking for ways to enhance their learning by building upon their specific learning strengths and teaching through affective, kinesthetic, auditory, or visual models.

Each student has individual gifts, talents, experiences and interests that can be strengthened and used to build bridges from current knowledge-sets to construct new knowledge-sets. Students have innate curiosity which needs to be supported and encouraged through exploration of ideas and seeking self-relevant solutions. Far too often education can be used as a means of force, whereby teachers only pull from students that which they value, or push into them what they deem imperative. It is my firm belief that teaching is not simply a profession or craft, it is an art that resolutely states that it is never my prerogative to inscribe my values, my knowledge, or my expectations on a student, but rather to give students the tools whereby they construct their own knowledge base and therefore write their identity upon themselves.

The most effective teaching tool is modeling, which is why I stretch myself in learning to paint, draw, make my own ceramics, and continue to write and study. Where ever I find myself, I endeavor to make myself an expert in the history, flora, and fauna of the area. My hobbies include SCUBA, collecting old books, and propagating endangered species.

It is by example we demonstrate that life-long learning is not only possible, but desirable. Pushing our own limitations is the only means by which we gain awareness of the beauty and complexity of a world that delights to thrill with the joy of discovery. The richness of cultures, languages, art, sciences, and the environment are fathomless resources from which to draw deeply to encourage and invigorate, or to enrich and calm.
