How can a tutor assist you in conquering Elementary Math?

Elementary math can be a hard subject for many students. Every student excels somewhere, but for some, numbers and patterns simply don't click. This can be very worrying for many parents, as their student must pass the Georgia Milestones Assessment System exam. While this is a large concern, there is a simple way to help your child. They can still work towards performing to their highest potential with the help of a personal tutor. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can help you find an elementary math tutor in Atlanta, Georgia, for your student.

Math is an important subject for your student to learn, as it will be built upon for the remainder of their school career. Learning how to properly count, recognize values, and recognize patterns are fundamental skills that will be relied on for all of the concepts they'll learn later in life. With a personal tutor that can create original lesson plans, your student could be given help that is catered to their exact needs. Traditional school learning focuses on teaching to the average student, so if your child doesn't fall within that range, it can be difficult for them to keep up with the lessons. An Atlanta elementary math tutor can teach directly to your child. That is the beauty of one-on-one sessions for your student. Each of your child's learning needs can be catered to throughout their lessons.

The student's mom wanted me to focus on grammar and math, so I split the session evenly. We started by reviewing contractions. Since the student's first language is German, he has a harder time understanding contractions and idioms vs. formal English. I had him write sentences using contractions until they felt more natural. Next, I taught him about homophones and homonyms, and when certain words (their/there/they're, etc.) should be used. We finished with 45 minutes of fraction review and converting decimals to fractions.

Today we worked on adding two three-digit numbers without using tally marks. We used fingers but had trouble selecting the right number or fingers and /or. Counting too fast, losing count, etc. The student may need to practice how many fingers are each number. We learned what the student is doing at school. The student takes the top number, puts it on his forehead, and counts the bottom number on his fingers. First he must select the number of fingers before counting. We will practice this more in the future, and regrouping.
