BA Duke University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American History. I recently received my Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began my career as an attorney. I am passionate about continuing my work in education through tutoring. I enjoy tutoring many subjects, particularly History, SAT Reading and Writing, College Essays, and Spanish. I love assisting students in implementing simple but effective changes in their preparation for Standardized Tests that show immediate results. I find this motivates students to continue through struggles in their educational pursuits. When I am not working, I enjoy yoga, running, cooking, traveling and playing the cello.

7+ Years Tutoring

I am currently a rising junior at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia although I am originally from Chicago, IL. I am double majoring in Psychology and English. My current GPA is a 3.9 and I have taken a wide range of courses. I was editor in chief of my school's newspaper, competed internationally for our Model UN team, and I currently college counsel low-income high-achieving students at high schools in downtown Atlanta, in addition to tutoring multiple students in ACT/SAT prep, English, Biology, and History. This includes helping them prepare for standardized tests, editing essays and applications, and generating lists of potential institutions to apply to. I received a 35 on my ACT. In the past, I was a teacher's assistant at a home and school for severely autistic children ages 9-14, and worked on overcoming communicative barriers to foster interpersonal connections. I have also tutored multiple children with learning disabilities. In my experience, getting students engaged is just about finding the strategy that works best for them. That may mean we have to try multiple approaches, or approaches that I don't prefer, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that incredible feeling with a student when they finally grasp a concept.

On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.

PhD Harvard University • BA Wesleyan University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.

MS Simmons College • BA Washington University in St. Louis
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of Washington University in St Louis, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with minors in Humanities and Anthropology. Since graduation, I have worked as a tutor, teacher, and director of tutors at a charter public middle school in Boston. During this time I also received my Masters in Mild to Moderate Disabilities from Simmons College. I have worked extensively with students with a range of abilities, including students with specific learning disabilities, emotional impairments, dyslexia, and ADHD. My teaching experience has given me a deep understanding of the knowledge and habits essential to academic success and has given me the opportunity to hone a variety of strategies that ensure students at each level can achieve their academic goals. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my favorite ones are Reading, Elementary/Middle School Math, History, and Test Prep. In my experience, tutoring is the most rewarding when a student has that "aha!" moment and achieves a new level of understanding and confidence in his/her abilities. I am a firm believer in the transformative power of education, and I see my role to be that of a facilitator and coach who is there to help the student reach his/her goals through individualized support and rigorous practice. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, practicing my Spanish, and discovering new music. I am also an avid traveler and just got back from a 3 month trip to South America. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

BA Yale University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals!

BA Harvard College
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I've always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with my peers and those around me and have done so in both formal and informal settings. I've been a tutor for both Math and Spanish programs in high school and enjoyed the strides I made with students. I am willing to tutor any subject I have a background in, but am strong in mathematics, the sciences, Spanish, history, writing, and ACT prep. I enjoy teaching mathematics most due to the joy I can see in children once they master a topic and can answer even pointed questions meant to stump them, and maybe even put their knowledge to real world use. As a tutor, I like to give a strong foundation to orient my student, and then gradually grant them more freedom and independence until they can feel themselves grasp the concept, pointing out pitfalls or common errors along the way; teachers who used these methods on me always left the most lasting impressions. Outside of my studies, I really enjoy listening to music, both old favorites and new interests, reading classics, and gaming/playing basketball with my friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

ISEE preparation requires focused strategy that goes beyond classroom learning. While Atlanta's schools provide a strong foundation, the ISEE tests reasoning and critical thinking in ways that differ from typical standardized tests. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to identify your specific weaknesses—whether that's reading comprehension stamina, quantitative reasoning patterns, or essay writing strategy—and target those areas directly. This focused approach typically produces faster score improvements than classroom instruction alone.

Most students benefit from 3-6 months of consistent preparation, though this varies based on your starting point and target score. A tutor can assess your current skills and create a timeline tailored to your goals. Students who start earlier often feel less pressure and can space out their study, which research shows leads to better retention. If you're testing soon, intensive preparation over 4-8 weeks can still yield meaningful improvements.

Atlanta students typically struggle with three areas: the reading comprehension section (which requires speed and retention over longer passages), quantitative reasoning (especially word problems that mix multiple concepts), and managing test anxiety during the lengthy exam. The ISEE's emphasis on reasoning over pure memorization catches some students off guard. A personalized approach addresses these specific challenges through targeted practice, strategy coaching, and building confidence through measured progress.

Yes—the Primary, Intermediate, and Upper Level ISEE tests differ significantly in content and difficulty. The Intermediate level (typically for 6th-7th grade entry) focuses more on foundational skills, while the Upper Level (for 8th grade and higher) emphasizes advanced reasoning and complex reading passages. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who understand these distinctions and can tailor preparation to your specific ISEE level, ensuring your practice directly matches what you'll encounter on test day.

Test anxiety often stems from uncertainty—not knowing what to expect or doubting your preparation. With 1-on-1 instruction, tutors build familiarity with the exact format, question types, and timing of the ISEE through repeated practice. They also teach strategic test-taking skills and help you recognize patterns in your performance. This combination of thorough preparation and personalized coaching typically reduces anxiety significantly, allowing you to perform closer to your actual ability on test day.

The ISEE differs from tests like the SSAT and other entrance exams in its structure, question formats, and what it emphasizes. The ISEE includes unique sections like Quantitative Reasoning (not found on all entrance exams) and focuses heavily on reading comprehension across different genres. If you're preparing specifically for Atlanta independent schools or other institutions using the ISEE, it's important to study the actual test format rather than generic test prep. A tutor can ensure your preparation directly targets ISEE-specific strategies and content.

Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have deep experience preparing students for the ISEE. When you reach out, you can describe your current level, target score, and timeline. Tutors can share their ISEE experience and approach, and you'll be matched based on both expertise and fit. Many students find that having a dedicated ISEE specialist—rather than a generalist tutor—leads to faster progress and better results.
